Rankings suddenly dropped

My free ipad site has suddenly crashed down the rankings...
I'm sure there will be a few on here that will be pleased, and many who won't feel sorry for me, I'm just wondering what has happened. I've done nothing new as far as link building strategy goes, and I haven't changed anything else.

Can't help but feel something dodgy is going on. Oh well, just hope it comes back.

Same feeling as myself, Harvez, Furbs, tombsc and others no doubt felt when our sites got slapped.

Google's a bitch, no other way to explain it.

Have you had any spike in traffic or anything lately?

May well just be google are cracking down on referral and affiliates sites, they may see them as low quality.

Fresh content is key so if you haven't updated in awhile then that too may also be a reason.

what you need to do is write as much unique content as you can and update the website every week with a blog post.

the most powerful type of backlinks is contextual backlinks so I suggest you go on fiverr and find a gig that will submit an article with your link in to lots of different article directories and blog networks.

your site is old enough to be able to get 1,000 links a day and not get any penalty. it might just be because you are not building as much quality links as your competition is.

Sorry to hear about it. Add/update content in order to keep the site fresh and expand it, and look for some good quality links.
i.e. From relevant sites, within relevant text, from high PR domains.

When you say it's crashed in rankings what are your positions now for your main keywords?
Have you dropped completely or are you sat down around page 5 or 6 for every keyword?

If your keywords have vanished completely (but your site is still indexed) then it sounds like an extreme dance (a bit like a barn dance on acid...) and will probably come back in a week or so but if you are sat down on page 5-6ish then that would indicate a -50 penalty which would be pretty hard to recover from any time soon.

Just my opinion of course...

Yeah, contextual links are powerful. However, private blog networks are better than article dirs. More fresh content will be another great addition.

Showing at position 7 for me.

Google is constantly dancing, just keep doing what got your there in the first place and no doubt it will recover.

You've got at least three sites that are or have ranked first, I can't imagine there is much else we can say that you don't already know. You should be giving us tips

Cruel - All my other terms are OK, just free iPad! Free iPad 2 has slipped one but I saw that coming ages ago. Seems like a single keyword drop.

Google is forever changing and if you outdated sources then it isn't going to work as well as it may of used to.

Trying to look at it logically:

The good thing is that your site hasn't been penalised in any way. So you don't need to wait for it to get reversed etc.etc.

The bad news is that either the algorithms have changed in favour of the other sites, the owners of the other sites have done more work than you, or some of the work you have done has been discounted (removal of links).

The only solution is to use some of the money you have earnt to experiment a bit on link building methods. If what you have been doing is no longer enough then you'll have to try other methods.

I've not built links to my freebie site for about a year and lost those few number one places I did hold - so I know how you feel!

But then a non-freebie site which I complained about completely losing rankings came back a week later.

It just shows how much of it is guess work and so try not to let it get to you!
