Determining if a visitor comes from ppc

Wondered if anyone here would know this...

I want to hide a button on a website if a visitor comes clicks a ppc ad. I am doing so by reading a google cookie that should be set if the visitor has clicked the ad.

But it doesn't seem to be working all that well. And I wondered if anyone here had needed to do anything similar and knew a more bulletproof way.
