Hi ive got myself a website up and running, I'm new to all of this btw, I know you need to get back links to your website to get it into google, and high up in google, but how many do you need? And how can you get good back links? I'm bait confused with all this.. Like how hard would it be to get into the first few pages of google? And what would be the best way of going about it? Thankyou in advance

You need a lot of backlinks, particularly when you consider the competition you're up against.

A few tips:
1. Post on blogs with your name as your anchor text and the URL as your freebie site. Make sure the blog is a dofollow blog so that you'll get the backlink counted.

2. Submit articles on the freebie item to various article submission sites, include a link to your site in the article.

3. Use link exchanges.

4. Look at DigitalPoint.com Forums. Many of the successful members from exceem are on there. See what they've ordered. Hint hint.

Aim for high PR, dofollow websites. Don't spam or Google may punish you. If you can find high PR blogs that automatically approve your comments, there's a good start.

I'm guessing that it is your iPhone website that you want to promote. That would be a very hard market as most people on here have one. I'm guessing that the more good quality backlinks, the better. There is no limit to how many you have.

I'm not any good at it either, so heres hoping that someone helps us both out

Yeah chappers it is, its the only one ive got atm, although i might make another one for something less popular tonight, i think you might be right with that!

Almost forgot a really important tip. Use backlinkwatch.com to see where your competitors have their backlinks at. It also tells you whether their backlinks are dofollow or not.

Just had a look at my competitors backlinks (who is on this forum I believe) and they have over 3500! Compared to my 5 haha

Basically, Whoever ranks highest/high for a term will get the most views/traffic for that term and in turn more potential to make money. So by "giving away" specific ways of getting backlinks and other SEO related stuff they are kind of making it harder for themselves to stay up there, so it'll be harder to make the money.

The points made so far about SEO are very good. They are kind of general, so you'll have to find ways of getting the best out of each. eg. Find relatively high PR websites to get links on, Get them with the lowest price possible (if you cant get it for free!) etc.
