A blog is a way of providing fresh content on your website that will be relevant to your target audience that may keep them returning to your website. It will need to be carefully written to maintain keyword density etc etc and you will need to blog at regular intervals.

Search Engines like blogs but its not essential, it all depends if you have the time to make it work. On the other hand you could automate the blog, I set up a random blog just to generate traffic to a domain name as part of a business scheme that is now a fully automated blog - Xbox Live Gold - 12 months free xbox gold live account - so it doesnt have to take up all your time.

there ae lots of very good tools for blogs that make it very easy to get traffic from them

the way for you to create the blog would be to install Wordpress in a /blog subdirectory (which is where google looks for blogs)

I like wordpress, and I am forever learning new tricks.... which may eventually pay off when used in the right combination!!

Adding a blog is a good way of getting visitors. Especially if you keep it updated with the latest news/reviews etc for your target audience. The trouble is that they'll come to the blog to read whatever you've posted, and not necessarily to click your freebie link. The trick is to grab their attention when they've arrived for something unrelated to freebies, and get them to click your link.

I have a blog on gratisgadgets site, and I've noticed that I get visitors to the blog for a lot of different keywords. But I get very few click throughs to the freebie site from the blog. I'm going to try fixing that though.
