i am really confused with all this website stuff.... when i search for my website on google it dosnt even come up... does anyone know why??

you gotta promote with back links and get a good PR you cant just get a domain and think your gonna be number 1 on google.

also sign up to igoogle webmaster tools

if you want to see if your website is on google or no .. just write in search bar your link and then "search" you'll see your website

Just a quick question. Would putting a links page on my websit improve its ranking on google? or does it only work the other way round if websites link to me?

You'd feel the benefits of it if your link was on someone else's website. Your best bet is to try and exchange links with people. I'm pretty sure there's a thread in extra for this.

Two things: Firstly, the book, Principals of beautiful web design (sitepoint) is very good, I just read it a few days ago (didn't see it here; found it at a bookstore months before reading this). Secondly, all I have to say about w3schools is this.
