This site has just been launched by Sitepoint. Their books are really good, so this should be a good resource for those wanting to learn CSS.

Re: The Website Improvement Thread

Good thread. Your not the only person trying to eradicate tables from web design. I am a professionally web developer and until about 6 years ago (is it really that long since css layouts arrived) I used to layout all the sites I did using tables, now I cringe when I see one.

One thing though, you mentioned SEO and having a well coded layout as though they were unrelated. However having well layed out html can help with SEO. Search engines have to read the html of the page, if the page is well laid out it means the robot doesn't have to read as much to get to the actual text which is a good thing.

Also some search engines put more importance on the headings of a page however in poorly structured pages where no html heading tags (h1, h2 etc) are used all the text is treated the same.

And this site also provides some good information about CSS. Some of the articles are particularly useful for CSS layouts.

A List Apart: A List Apart

Re-designing my site and found this site while looking for some tutorials.

Even More Rounded Corners With CSS - Schillmania.com

The header is seriously cool! Check out the control at the left edge. You can slide it to turn the brightness up or down. And the control at the bottom right changes the image. Proper clever that!

For anyone that uses Firefox and is trying to build a website, or figure out why something isn't working on their own site, then an invaluable tool is the Web Developer Toolbar add on

Get it here - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

A .co.uk, or .me.uk may be better if your specifically targeting towards a particular geographical region. Otherwise, a .com or .net should be fine.

For those that use Firefox, here's a collection of useful add ons you can use when developing your site;

Dust-Me Selectors - Checks your page or site for any unused CSS code, so you can clean up your stylesheets (Doesn't look at inline styles).

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60 - lots of useful tools for viewing different aspects of a web page. Also lets you edit CSS on the fly to help diagnose display issues.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 - lets you view a webpage in a new tab within Firefox how Internet Explorer would render it. Saves you having to open IE as well as Firefox to check a page.

ColorZilla for Firefox - Eyedropper, Color Picker and much more - colour picker that works for web pages.

MeasureIt - Firefox ruler extension for web developers - lets you measure elements on a webpage to find the size of it.

Dont forget Firebug

Insanely useful add-on for quickly debugging a site. A must have in my opinion.

This is sort of related to web design. For those that don't have Photoshop, I just had to share this online utility. Been using it a bit today and it seems really useful.
