![]() | LaptopHey guys , I'm sort of looking for a new laptop at the moment , just a pre-warning , I don't have much of a clue about the technical aspects! I'm looking on the cheapish side (not so cheap that its utter ****) but was looking at this (liked my old toshiba) : Toshiba Satellite C660-17L 15.6 inch Notebook (Intel Pentium P6100 Processor, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories or something in a similar price range. Another question. Is the extra 3GB Ram worth £30 and will I notice a big enough difference. I'm open to suggestions so thanks in advance!

![]() | Or is it worth the risk attempting to upgrade the RAM myself? Has anyone ever done this? Found 2x4GB (Basically 8gb) sticks for £40? Worth it or not?

| What to put... | Laptop looks fine, my friend has the same although he has it with the i5 processor which would be more expensive. As for the RAM, it ultimately depends on what you plan to use it for, 3GB is fine if you do the casual browsing, word etc. Although if you do photoshop which i have seen you do recently then 6GB is the better bet as it will run a lot smoother and won't be as laggy. If you want to buy RAM and install it yourself then you know which type to buy (DDR2, DDR3) and need to make sure it is the right size for the laptop, if you know this then go ahead but an extra £30 for 3GB extra RAM doesn't seem a big rip off.

| Free The Gadgets | If you could stretch a few extra pound one of these... Acer Aspire 5733 15.6 inch Notebook (Intel Core i3-370M Processor, RAM 4GB, HDD 500GB, DVD-Super Multi DL Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories Acer Aspire 5733 15.6 inch Notebook (Intel Core i3-370M Processor, 6 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, DVD-Super Multi DL Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories Acer are a much better laptop all around and the extra RAM and the i3 processor are worth the extra money!

Edit : Problem with them to is I've got 1 copy of microsoft office (full version with everything on) left which only works on windows 32-bit which would mean forking out another £40. I'll consider the benefits. Edit : If you were picking out of the 2 acers which one would you go for. One has more RAM while the other has a bigger HDD

| What to put... | You can run 32 bit programs on 64 bit so there is no need to worry about that. The 2 acer's are the same, one just has more RAM and HDD at a more expensive price. The touchpads are aligned in the center of the standard keyboard but to the left of the actual laptop itself, the reason for this is because they both have full keyboards (with the number pad).

| What to put... | You said you bought it from that student software site, if you bought it then ideally you get the download option too? To be honest, it doesn't make a great difference between 34 and 64, it just means 64 will be able to run at maximum performance as that's what it is built for.

| Currently: Moderating! | I had the same copy. You can use the 32-bit on a 64-bit computer. As Ryan says it just won't be maximised, but thats fine. You won't notice the difference.

![]() | Do the RAM !!! It really made a difference when up dating from 4 GB to 16. BUt the more the better. I payed about $240 US to upgrade that much. Also mine is 64. And finally, the ones that corky posted are nice since they have the intel i3. Thats the 3rd best processor out there. Behind i5 and i7 obviously. That upgrade to i3 cost about $150-200 US also |
