Help with PC speakers

They are basic Creative stereo speakers for a desktop PC, with a line-out input.

Im using Win 7 but despite having them connected to the laptop's line-out port the PC doesn't recognise them AT ALL.

I go into Sound settings and its not listed as enabled OR disabled, in device manager i update the onboard sound card drivers (says they're already up-to-date) and the speakers are on and came with no driver CD so they should be plug and play) yet my new copy of Windows 7 just doesn't notice any difference between when they are plugged in or not.

I guess what I need is to know how to 'enable' the line-out socket for my lappy's sound card? I assumed it would just work right away. My USB headset does but these are nice 3.5mm jack speakers and Windows doesn't even seem to notice the PC has a line-out port!

Any advice would be very helpful thanks all

my inbuilt sound card is still working fine and it says drivers are up to date, but my line out is still not recognised.

i suspect it may be related to the fact i just installed a standalone copy of Windows 7 on an Acer-built laptop which was designed for Windows Vista and had various Acer things pre-installed when I bought it a few years ago.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Download the drivers from the soundcard/motherboard manufacturer's site, rather than letting Windows source them itself.

Chances are you're probably selecting the wrong audio output in the control panel, post some screenshots?

as it happens im very familiar with the sound settings in windows cus I always switch on my main PC and have a shorcut on the desktop for quick access, but the motherboard thing sounds like a good idea, but how can I find out what motherboard is in this cheap *PoS* pcworld laptop??
