iPhone 3GS help

I am selling my iPhone 3GS to my mate and i would like to know that if I restore my iPhone to it's factory settings. I already did the settings> reset> erase all data and content method and somehow the phone is asking my mate to insert a valid sim card. When I insert my sim card, the phone does not get recognised when I go in iTunes.
What's going on and help anyone? Sorry for being very basic. It is early morning and I'm felling very sleepy. I'll explain more when I am not sleep deprived. lol!

I am not sure. That's what I am to trying to find out. I am trying to put a vodaphone sim because I know that they have iPhone 3GS on Vodapone. T mobile, I am not sure about.
It seems a bit strange now when my original O2 contract sim is not being recognised now.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately none of the suggestion worked.
What I had to do is do a full restore by doing a hard reset on the phone. For those interested on how to do a hard reset go to: How to Hard Reset an iPhone - wikiHow. This worked on my iPhone 3GS. I then had to register it again via iTunes.
I also discovered that my iPhone was not in fact unlocked as I was told when I purchased the iPhone. Somehow, the iPhone got locked to O2. Maybe they are locked but I was advised wrongly by the the sales staff in carphonewarehouse. As I am with O2, I managed to get it unlocked by requesting a unlock request by filling out a form form the O2 website by going here: O2 | iPhone Unlocking | Find out about unlocking your iPhone.
Currently they only allow iPhone 2G/3G/3GS to be unlocked for free if you are on contract. For pay as you go customers, they charge £15, which will be deducted from your phone credit so make sure that you have funds. If you don't have funds and try doing this anyway (my other friend did. lol! ), you will not get a confirmation text and will get a error message. This will take up to two weeks, however I recieved the confirmation text within two days.
After unlocking the iPhone , I swapped the sim around and put my mates sim in it, it finally worked. He's a happy bunny now! lol!
I hope that this may come useful for others.
