Computer (Vista) soooo slow!

Morning eXceemer's...

I'm at my Mum and Dad's house this weekend and they've had their PC for about 3 years now; it's Windows Vista and has over 3/4 of the hardrive's free. The computer, for some reason, goes so slow...

Would it be worth wiping everything off it and basically re-starting everything as if it were a brand new computer?

Any ideas please, and also how to do them

Have the fans been cleaned out inside? even the cleanest of house still get dust which will clog up the fans etc.

what memory is installed?
the hard drive could be on it's way out hence the slow load times, I would get a new 80Gig drive use that as the main system drive and install all apps etc on the older drive you will find things move a lot quicker.

If you have backed up any files/photos etc that they want to keep, personally I would re-start again, like you mention and then just download programs needed e.g. zone alarm etc

I take it you have done all the usual stuff, virus check...malware etc.

Yeah, I agree with everyone. First, run a virus/spyware program to check for infections. Then defrag, then check the fans and clean them out. See if the computer runs faster. If not, restart the whole thing
Good luck with getting it sorted!

1: Check for viruses
2: ScanDisk
3: CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download < This program is a god send. Clean up the computer.
4: Use CCleaner to defrag

If you are still not happy, then back up your files and software (remember all your programs, printers, internet etc will need to be reinstalled), and completely wipe and reboot the computer.

It for your parents, I assume they use basic programs ? Maybe a free linux distribution and you can say Au Revoir to viruses and slow-ness .
I found the posts above very helpful though. Good luck

Just to add, if you're gonna clean up the registry with CCleaner make sure to back it up before hand, as 3rd party softwares sometimes can mess it up.

Thank you for all the input everyone. Yep, I've virus checked it, cleaned it, defragged, the lot! We've backed everything up - I may re-boot it all, and if it's still slow, they may need to get a new one!
