Could be a dodgy battery or power supply?

Ye, I just replaced the battery a while ago, and the power supply's also fairly new. I've taken the battery out to see if that helps, but don't understand how the battery could cause that.

cheers

turn it off. and try hoovering the vents around the processor. should be easy to spot (underneath) it dont have to get that hot to reset. I did mine not so long ago as I had a very similar thing.

Cheers, I actually did that the other day, bought a can of compressed air (can't believe I bought air!!!) and cleaned them all cause it was getting loud and pretty hot. Had seemed ok til today really. I've taken the battery out and it's still goin which is good.

Any idea why the battery could do that?

I would say its probably the actual charger part that charges the battery while its attached then. probably got perfectly good batteries but the laptop part is knackered !

Besides the fact that I'm a student with £0 income, the laptop's only a year and a half old, still runs perfectly apart from this (and randomly the screen kept going black for a while ).

It's an HP pavilion 6735s

Ye, i tink so.

I know you can be protected for longer than that, but right now I don't have the time to be without a laptop or to spend time arguin with their staff about it.

As long as it works with the battery out I guess that'll do for now. During summer when I don't need a laptop guess I could try.

Thanks guys

Well, sadly my laptop's taken another bad turn and now the inverter (i think) has gone. The screen's gone completely dark, but there is still stuff there. From what I've read it's usually the inverter that's the problem.

If it was only this I'd probs get it fixed but with it turning itself off etc I think I'll replace it.

Just wondering, if I bought just the basic shell (everything but the Hard drive) so no software etc, would it be much cheaper? and would I be able to just put my old hard drive in? I've got a lot of software etc that I'd rather not loose.

I face the same kind of problem with my compaq before few months. I handed over to workshop for that error. After say 5 days they gave me my laptop and said now it is completely fine. I ask them what exactly the problem was. Guess what did they say they don't have any answer they had just change the motherboard.

I had a problem similar to this on my old thinkpad...i took it apart and noticed the were some loose fittings on the motherboard, so that had to be replaced. Asked how much the parts would be and they quoted me like £500 + labour and shipping, so i just got a new laptop lol

If all the fans are clean and functioning correctly then that rules out it being a CPU error, if it was shutting down before your inverter broke then I dont think it was (at least initially) the power supply causing the problem. Which would make me believe it to be the memory making it fail, is the RAM seated correctly? did you touch it when you were cleaning it out?

But if it's only 6 months old you shouldn't have to pay for this?

It could be a GPU over heating issue or the GPU is not mounted correctly, I have had loads of issues with my Dell XPS 1710 and it sounds like you are having the same issues as I had.

Laptops air flow is a lot different then the standard PC, you don't have a fan which cools the CPU, normally in laptops you will get one fan sucking air in and blowing it through to the other side which has another fan that sucks it out.

The CPU is cooled by a heat sink pipe which draws the heat away from the CPU to the fan which is sucking the hot air out.

The fact your screen is going black or faint means either a loose connection or your GPU has had it.

Hope all gets sorted soon.
