Need urgent help re SecuROM

I installed GTA IV from a cracked download but didnt use the crack. Instead i bought a legal copy of the game at Direct2Drive.

After the cracked install I tried to delete the installation to start afresh with the legal copy but it wouldnt work - it just says "Failed to release SecuROM licence"

How can i uninstall GTA IV completely so i can reinstall and actually play this game that i've paid for? Any ideas please Im desperate now, thanks

Try and go to you (C) drive and manually delete the folder ?

That should do it..Make sure anything GTA related is not running when doing this

Then use CCleaner to clear up any reg files the uninstall has left behind!

Just delete Rockstar Games folder in C:\Program Files.
And run Registry Cleaner and Disk Cleanup to make your computer clean to be on the safe side.

thanks guys just tried all that but still having problem.

i cannot reinstall because the installer detects an existing installation and so only offers you the choices of Modify, Repair or Remove, and removing doesnt seem to do anything.

I've tried deleting all folders manually as well as running SecuROM uninstaller.exe as well as TrashReg to manually remove the null embedded key for securom.

Restarted PC, done everything you guys have suggested but still can't play.

Depending on what I do i either get the message "Failed to release SecuROM license" or it says "Your system is incompatible with Grand Theft Auto IV. Click on the link below for more information." - only there is no link and instead there is simply a picture of the Microsfot logo.

To combat that i even tried running the installers in compatibility mode (Vista SP1), but still no joy.

How along ago did you install the naughty GTA? Too long ago to knock Windows back to before it happened?

gpow is a jewel in the rough
Try tuneup utilities. You can uninstall programs with that, in cleans and compresses your reg, and it also clears old files. So it might make it work, its worth a try.

That sucks.

I thought giving your Reg a good clear out would have picked up any GTA bits left on your system to be honest.

Just out of curiosity (sp?) why did you by GTA if you had a cracked version of it?

Didnt really think it through and half way through decided that id just buy a copy. I didnt even crack the .exe i just installed it and then couldnt uninstall it.

unless anyone has any other ideas im pretty much resigned to losing my £15 on a game i cannot play. what a waste!
