Question about laptop hard drives

A couple of months ago my old laptops hard drive seemed to die, clicking noises etc.

Anyway, my son is looking for a cheap laptop so I was thinking that maybe I could get a new/replacement hard drive for mine and get that working for him.

Now, this is where i get confused, lol. I took the hard drive out the laptop (which is an Advent 7104 60GB model) and the hard drive says its a NOTE60GBIDE, not much more writing on it.

I looked on ebay and see 60 gb IDE hard drives there but none for Advents. Will any 60GB hard drive fit in as long as it's IDE and 2.5", plus can i get a higher GB drive to fit?

I have the instalation disk to put Windows etc back on. Any advice?

If you search for the model of your laptop you might be able to find out exactly what kind of hard drive it is built with.

Equally you could search and see what alternative hard drives would be compatible with the other components?

Oh, by the way, looking at that code, looks like your hard drive is IDE, so when your buying look for IDE, not SATA.

Would recommend you to buy it from ebuyer, because I've just had a quick look on ebay and ebuyer sells them even cheaper plus free delivery.

for example this one - Samsung HM160HC 160GB 2.5" Hard Drive IDE 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM - Ebuyer

there's not much of a choice for IDE hard drives because they are a bit slower than sata and not very popular -Laptop IDE Hard Drive | Hard Drives - Ebuyer

Mine says that it's 4,200 rpm, does that matter? The samsung one is 160GB but is cheaper than the fujitso one which is only 40gb but the fujitsu one is 4,200 rpm

Am confused but at least ebuyer accept paypal. The downside is that the warehouse is about 3 miles from me but still takes a week to get here, lol.

Dont worry, 5200rpm should work, because the hard drives run independently.
It will just be little bit quicker than the 4200rpm one.

Samsung hard drives aren't the best quality make, but they are still better than Fujitsu. Don't know why the price of fujitsu is so high. The best hard drives are Western Digital, but the price is also higher.

From ebuyer you can even expect the 5 day free delivery to come next day if they're not busy had few of my goods come next day or after 2 days with the free delivery

May not be that simple. As it's an IDE, there could be certain Motherboard or BIOS restrictions limiting what capacity you can use. If you can, check your motherboard manual to see if it says what it will accept.

Well, on djoscar's advice and after reading the replies, I bought the samsung 160GB hard drive and it arrived this morning.

Removed old one, put in new one, ran my recovery disk and all seems to have gone well. Have now connected wireless internet so I can install avg/zone alarm and windows update. Will be giving it to my son to "borrow".

Once again, thanks for all the knowledgeable help and advice. It's nice that exceem members have such a wide range of knowledge
