Multiple apps don't really run at once, that's why Android OS emphasises on multitasking at the minute. Try holding the home button for around 15 seconds, if I remember correctly it force quits open apps.

What iPhone and iPhone software are you using? If it is a 3GS or iPhone 4 on IOS4 then you can double tap the home button to display all programs open in multitasking. Then if you press and hold an app in the multitasking bar it will start to wiggle and you will see a red cross. If you press the rest cross you close the apps.

For the other iPhones and iPhone operating systems I don't know of a method of doing what you ask unless the phone is jailbroken. The operating system should take care of it but if it gets really bad you can restart the phone.

suparuss has a spectacular aura about
Double tap the Home button to bring up the multitasking bar

Press and hold on any app in the bar to get the close app feature

Click the red icon on all apps you want to close and you'll instantly notice your iPhone is fast again
