Macbook start up disk full problem

Have started to get an error recently on my Macbook, which is annoying me. Bear in mind that I mainly use the Macbook for surfing the net, hardly use any applications at all.

Anyway, after a while surfing, the screen sometimes freezes and then eventually a box comes up saying something that I have no space left on my start up disk for applications and I end up having to restart.

Now, I have plenty memory on the mackbook but i have no idea why this message keeps appearing.

Any ideas/remedies?

bout 30 minutes ago I dont have anything running (that i know off) apart from Firefox. On internet explorer I would be able to clear temporary internet files but am unsure how to do that on a Macbook. Just cleared history and trash.

Hi There,

Me too! Same model, and same errors.
The warning is a RAM issue.

How much RAM does your Mac have? If it's 2 Dimms, then your in luck. Simply remove the Dimm from the Bottom slot (take the top one out first), and restart from the 1 DIMM.

If you've only got the 1 Dimm that came with it, you'll need to replace it. (About £50 per 1GB).

You'll need a mini jewelers screwdriver to get the RAM out/replaced...

That should fix your problems & pass the hardware test.

I wiped my HD and couldn't re-install the OS because of this... Back up and running now... (Wish I'd done Hardware test before all the 'Writing zero's etc. that it recommended in the other thread.) Hope this helps...
Might be useful.. This was an answer to the same question someone else asked.

It can be both the ram and the hdd, i've had this problem on my old PowerMac G4 (those 10 gig hard drives sure fill up quick!)

There's a utility called CleanMyMac that can give you a good idea of what might be clogging up your disk/memory. I know there is a free version available for download, but i don't know how much it will let you do as opposed to the paid.

If you have the installation disks, have you tried running the "repair disk" utility? I did that and it found a fault, repaired it and I stopped getting the message.

You get two supplied with purchase, one is the operating system (Mac OS) and the other is an applications disk including iphoto, imovie and all that.

You need the operating disk, boot it up with that and up the top should be a menu bar, in the menu bar you should find disk utility. Click that and click on your hdd and click repair.

if you just use the "repair disk" utility, it wont erase any data.

You can also just go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utilities if you can't find the install disk.
