Software for joining videos and software for converting mp4

Can anyone recommend any good software for converting dvd to youtube friendly format. I'd also love it if it allowed mp4's to be spliced into videos.

Or failing that software that will splice avis together without the audio going out of sync.

(sorry for the title fail, started one thread then changed what I wanted)

have a look at Welcome to virtualdub.org! - virtualdub.org for joining avis. together very simple just load the first vid up then click append and select the second then just make sure that the video processing is on direct stream copy and also the audio and it will stitch the two vids together in seconds, you can also use it to re encode it to various formats which will be utube friendly its open source and free software and imo one of the best.
Happy new year

the clip must have been out of audio already for it to do that if you are copying using direct stream, and if you arent then it is probably the way you are encoding it that is causing it. when it comes up does it give you a warning telling you that it is using vbr audio detected and it may encounter sync errors up to ie 137ms + when attempting to extract? out of sync sort of thing?

Basically if you are just joining the two vids unless they are out of sync already you must be re encoding them, so usually when you load the avi up you would need to goto the video tab and tick the direct stream copy option and do the same for the audio, then when you are appending the two videos it should take only two minutes or so to genearate a 1.4 gig size file. Is this what you are doing at the moment?

Nope, all the individual clips are synced. And I don't get any errors. Video and audio is set to "Direct Stream Copy".

I think it just must be virtualdub can't deal with the number of clips I have. There are 10 clips in total, all synced until I put them together. I've tried appending the first 6 clips into one bigger one then the other 4 clips into another and combining them but that doesn't work either.

I might just keep them seperate or combine them 3 at a time or something. I'll see what works later.

Another question though, can you edit mp4s using virtualdub. I have a few of those I'd either like to splice into an avi or simply append together.

Only thing that I can think of then is that the first one that you are encoding encoded at a cbr rate and one of the ones going out of sync is a vbr or vice versa and when you are appending the video then it is assigning a cbr code to teh vbr rate and thus knocking it out of sync, you would have to re encode all the films into the same specs preferably a cbr rate Or it could be the codecs you have installed, suggest installing k-lite codec pack into your system and then seeing if it is still doing it.
mp4's wont work with virtual dub, I had to find something else to do those but cant remember what i used.

Its not my software it was written by someone else. Millions of us use it with no problem and 60% of all videos on the net are fixed or corrected with this program, every day I join plenty of videos every day without the problems you are occuring but then it is for the more advanced video editors, did you even scan the video file for bad frames? have you ticked the drop frames box even? Maybe it is just you that has the problem with it. If you had posted you hadnt had much success with it I would have posted a step by step guide for you, as the piece of crap software as you call it, is one of the few tools you can use to correct the audio sync problems properly, but instead now I will just let you carry on struggling as instead of posting up a thanks for trying to help you just assumed that because you couldnt use the program it was crap.
Silly boy.

I wasn't talking about virtualdub. There was a post made by a spammer that I was referring to that seems to have been deleted.

I actually find vitualdub quite useful although never have been able to use it to correct audio sync problems.

And I'm terribly sorry for making the title of the thread so attractive to spammers, next time I'll call it something like "software recommendations" so everyone who doesn't have any recommendations can waste their time reading the thread before finding out it's something they don't have an answer for.

And Larkino, Haggis, I'm a she
