Any Ideas??

I have been thinking about upgrading my desktop pc for a while and finally bought the RAM this week.

I installed the RAM and now the PC will not boot. The lights come on the fan starts up but nothing appears on the monitor.

I have tried using all the memory in another pc and it works fine. If I install the old ram back in the PC boots perfectly.

The PC is a Dell Dimension E520. It has a 305W PSU. I have read somewhere that the PSU could be the problem but I cannot see how this could be as the other PC I tried it in has the same PSU.

I made sure the speeds and RAM type matched the type I was currently using.

I have updated the BIOS. I have read something about a CMOS reset that may need to be carried out but I have not looked up how to do this yet.

If anybody has any ideas about this then the help would be appreciated.

I am a PC technician and have upgraded many computers in the past but have never come across anything like this before.

Thanks

Are you installing 1 or 2 sticks of ram? It might be something to do with the slots you're using i.e. only slots 1 & 3, or 2 & 4 can be paired etc. I've read about that before. Does the PC beep when you boot it? The number of beeps can help diagnose the problem.

Also, what mobo do you have?

It's ok I have sorted it now. I bought the RAM on a recommendation for the model of PC I had. I have since found out there are 2 different configurations for the same model. One uses PC-4200 533MHz and the other uses PC-5300 667MHz, I had bought the wrong type so simply exhanged for the other and it works correctly.

Thanks anyway mate

Cool. I was going to suggest that the speed might have been wrong, but as you said you were a PC tech, I didn't want to patronise you Glad you got it sorted.

I know, "PC Tech" couldn't believe it when I actually checked the chips and saw the difference. Felt so embarrassed after making that post.
