Midi help

I need help with creating a midi file.

Basically for part of my college course I have to create a midi file.

Quote:
Use the keyboard to generate a piece of music. Save the completed work as a midi file. If you wish, you can use a program like "Frets on Fire" to create music that you are sampling with "Audio To Midi", or intercept it with a midi keyboard, or Guitar Hero intercepts. Save the completed work as a midi file.
I have tried recording through line in and line out with my tv and laptop. Which works but when i convert the file to a midi file it's just playing a few random "plinks" here and there.

Anyone got any advice on what to do or how to do it?

Not sure what you've been taught but traditionally Audio and MIDI are two different things.

Audio data is sound sampled using A/D converters (through your line input). It's saved as a simple wav, aiff or MP3 file.
MIDI is data that can be assigned to a software instrument (or to an external MIDI device) and contains instructions to control note pitch, length, velocity, etc.

I think there is a way of converting audio to midi but haven't had much experience of how to do it. :s

Easiest way is to connect a MIDI keyboard to your computer and use a programme such as Logic or Cubase. You can also key it in manually if you don't have a keyboard.

Hope this helps!

I think I managed it last night by using garageband then converting a very basic tune to midi.

Is this to do with your web design course? I hope you're not being shown how to embed music into websites.

Yeah it's for my course but it's for an audio and video part of my course.

It's just another section of the course about audio and video file formats and types, more to the multimedia section.
