Ram

Right so I'm good with software, but when it comes to hardware stuff I'm screwed.

Is there any sort of thing that can show me if I have any spare RAM slots? My Laptop is painfully slow at the moment and need to speed it up... Also, is there a maximum to what a 32-bit Processer can use? If so what is it?

Thanks,
Jamie

I just bought some new RAM for my laptop and thier site had a Ram checker which shows you what you've got and what you could have. One sec and I'll find it.

EDIT: It's Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - About Crucial:Media Toolbox simply download it and it should check automatically

Thanks Digger. Downloading it now. Rob it's a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Inspiron E1505 in America)

edit: I got
# Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
# Currently Installed Memory: 2GB
# Available Memory Slots: 0
# Number of Banks: 2
# Dual Channel Support: Yes
# CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
# CPU Family: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2130 @ 1.86GHz Model 14, Stepping 12
# CPU Speed: 1586 MHz

So I guess it means I can't put anymore in?

yeh you've already got the max ram capacity. you may be able to upgrade your ram to PC2-5300 but i doubt its worth it.

eg if your current ram is 2x 533MHz you could get 2x 667MHz

Edit: plus you can check to see if your memory is dual channeled...that would increase its bandwidth

tbh upgrading to a faster speed memory really won't make a bean of difference.

Is this the same laptop that you installed windows 7 on ? If so it may just be that its too processor hungry to be ran (quickly) on your laptop.

Don't always take Crucial for sure, as it says my Laptop has 2 slots and I can only find 1.

No not really, it is the operating system you use that determines the max ram and usually your motherboard.
32 bit Xp is limited to 4 gig mem including your graphics memory though use of the /pae switch if your moby supports it can help overcome it in some cases.
64 bit xp is 128 gig

32 vista 4 gig

64 vista 8gig in basic 16gig in premium 128 gig in the rest.

Linux will depend on the kernel used mainly
