I have a virus... help needed!

As title says... ive got a virus...

Basicly when ever i open up the internet it only lets me go on this page saying i have a virus and need to download something but i fear this would only make things worse. Also when i open up normal folders i get a message saying i need to download something and the only way to get rid of it is by alt+ctrl+del....

So what are my options?

Ive tried doing system restore but it fails on every date ive tried so far.
Scanned my comp with norton finds nothing...
Should i basicly clear everything n start again?
Would every file be infected, i.e if i were to put all my music on an external hard drive n then on another computer would it affect that comp aswell.

Any help would be appreciated.

Andy

Download a virus scanner/spyware scanner, boot in safe mode, run scanner.

try going into safe mode with networking, that is if you connect to the internet by network, go to download.com and download spybot, run that and see what that finds, spybot is a freeware and is good. is it antivirus 2008 or something? that seems to be everywhere

Sometimes this isnt a virus, just a bug that has got into your internet.

Do you have any other computers in the house as a good thing to do is download (on the other computer) the set up files for a different browser. Then USB stick it to your other computer (with the virus.) Then set up the 'NEW' browser. Then try going online on that one and it should be fine, then download AVG and scan away for a virus!

Also another good thing to do is when you have got a working Browser:

Mozilla Firefox
IE
Safari

Then google what it is asking you to download and you should see that this happened to many other people, and will find a way to get rid!

Just whatever you do DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE IT WANTS YOU TO (JUST YET ANYWAY!)

Hope this helps

Go to this site [The home of Spybot-S&D!] and download the Spybot Search and Destroy, run it in Safe mode to be on the safe side and hopefully that's it!

If that don't help you can also download this [SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads], the free version and since you have Norton download this anti virus instead [Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition], I don't have it myself but I have seen many recommendations for it. If you want to pay out a small sum either get Kaspersky [I got it and its brill!] or NOD32, these 2 are probably the 2 best anti virus protection software in the market nowdays.

Hopefully the above wil help, if not what i suggested what the posts above has already suggested!

Cheers
Tom

It sounds more like some spy/adware rather than a virus. A virus will often just hide on your system and do bad things without you knowing, like opening a port and downloading more junk.

Spy/Adware causes the problems you're seeing where you're directed to another website. A spyware remover like Spybot should do the trick.

I had a similar sort of thing.
Malwarebytes.org Sorted it right out, plus it's free.
