| On my way to insanity! | Internet and Router help!I've been having some problems with my route and internet over the past few days. In the end, i've managed to get internet to my big pc using a USB cable from the modem to the physical pc. Problem is, i normally use my laptop. Now, whatever i try i cannot get my router to give out internet. It sends out a signal and i can connect to it, but it won't get any internet. It won't even work when i'm connected straight to the modem or router from the laptop via ethernet! I think the problem is that i've configured the moden for usb use (only way i could get it working) and me sticking the ethernet cable for the router in the moden doesn't give me any internet. (to the router) As the moden isn't set for ethernet.. It seems i've got two paths here.... Stick with usb internet and never use internet on my laptop again. (impossible) Call out a repair man to charge me £40 an hour for doing nothing but drinking tea. or does anyone have any ideas? ANy past experiences? I know there are some computer geeks here! It's just so frustrating!!!!!! All help will be appreciated. |

| On my way to insanity! | Re: Internet and Router help!well, theres only 1 router in the equation. There is 1 pc and one laptop. The router is connected to the pc, and the pc has got internet. WHat i'm trying to do is to get internet from the pc into the router and then from the router to the laptop to put it basically. That's how i've done it before. But now i'm using usb from the modem to the pc, instead of ethernet.. |

![]() | Re: Internet and Router help! The most likely case I can think of is that you have two seperate networks. when the modem is plugged in via the USB this is connecting to a network with Internet connection available, and when you are trying to connect to it through your laptop (wirelessly), you are connecting to a local only network which does not have internet access. When you have connected to the network via your laptop, check your Network Connections to see if your on the same network as your PC is on, if its not, this is what the problem is. If this is what it is, try disconnecting the modem from the PC via the USB and see if the laptop will connect ....and post back with what happens. |

![]() | Re: Internet and Router help!i hadnt read the first post properly but the one above has just made me re-read pc needs to be connected to the router via ethernet cable, if you plug the usb in it wont dish out the internet via the wireless as its pushing it all down the usb youve obviously got all the details in the router correctly or you wouldnt have any internet via the usb |

| On my way to insanity! | Re: Internet and Router help!yea, i've just noticed that i can log onto my router via the laptop! I just type in 192.168.11.1 (my ip) and type in router username... (root for most routers) and i got onto the router homepage! all mac addresses are fine and everything. To be honest i don't see how the screenshots will help.. WIll probably get it working tonight.

![]() | Re: Internet and Router help!going by a google search this is an adsl router so it should be the only thing your using to connect log into the router, check the wan setup, adsl settings, internet settings or whatever buffalo call it and see if the router is showing as having an internet connection that needs to be your first port of call, if it doesnt show connected reset the router to factory defaults....get the adsl login details out and start afresh the screenshots may help a little bit but going by what you have been saying already i dont think you will sort it tonight, no offence meant but root aint the admin password for most routers and its probs nothing to do with mac addresses either....if it was you wouldnt be able to connect to the wireless network... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Internet and Router help!so your on a virgin media cable connection (going by your IP)? The virgin media modems will output in either ethernet or usb. I would firstly suggest trying the following Turn off the cable modem and the router connect the cable modem to the router, from the specs I saw of your router it should have a ethernet input. Then connect one of its ethernet outputs to the PC - turn on both cable modem & router and check that works ok on the PC (may need a 2/3 min wait) Then attempt the wifi on your PC/laptop The alternative like grabrail suggested would to run internet sharing on the PC, downside to this is the PC would always have to be on. If its XP you should be able to run the windows home networking wizard (Think its called that, can be seen from "my network places") not sure on the vista equivlent. You would also need to check any firewall software on the PC is setup to allow connection sharing.
