Think I'm soon to be a Mac convert myself.

What am I going to miss the most? And why doesn't everyone have a Mac if they are so good?

Think I'll be doing more web building stuff which Mac is much better for right?

But for some people, they wouldn't buy it for that price anyway, so it's not like the companies are making a loss.

It's like "Man A sees adobe photoshop on amazon for £800, and stares at the ridiculously high price. The company makes no money. He moves on, saying that he will never spend that kind of money on a a piece of software. He finds he can use a key to unlock it for free, so he gets it. The company makes no money"

So he would never have bought it in the first place, thus meaning it makes no difference to the company. It's not like stealing it from a shop where it would actually be one less product they could have sold.

Just my view =).

So both outcomes are the same, they make neither a loss nor profit. It's not like stealing it from a shop where it would actually be one less product they could have sold.

Except the second option is illegal. It's exactly like stealing something from a store.

Adobe themselves have introduced student editions at 10% of the retail price. Smart move in my opinion, as it will encourage students to cough up rather than freeloading it.

How are the companies not making a loss?! Their product has been stolen.

Pfft.

I'm talking about a digital download - which means there are infinite compies. Which also means they are not one down that they could have sold, as it would never have been purchased in the first place. I know it is illegal, but it's ridiculous to put such high prices on these softwares.

You clearly don't understand how much effort goes into making such software..

If they sold it at lower prices - more people would buy it. And anyway, £800 per standard adobe PS CS3 extended? The amount of people that will buy it will make such a huge profit, way more than required to fund the making of it.

But I don't want to argue about this any further. We obviously have different views, and it would be unfair for me to take the thread off topic.

£110 not cheap enough for you? That's what I paid, which is more than reasonable.

Re: new mac convert

Adobe makes its money from the companies which use the software. If you look at it one way, adobe actually benefits from the piracy of its software by people who wouldn't pay for it normally.
This is because if they find an illegal copy of it, and they learn how to use it, they are more likely to get a job which requires the software and so the company they become employed at has to buy a license.

There is an article about it here - Devlounge | Piracy - Adobe’s Best Friend?

Okay, my last reply lol.

1) Okay adobe do student editions. But I'm not a student, and so aren't quite a few other people.

2) There are other softwares with ridiculous price tags other than adobe.

1) Everyone knows at least one student. It doesn't have to be university students either, anyone in full time education will do.

2) Name them? If you're not prepared to pay for them, you can't need them that badly.

NB: if you use torrents for solely legal downloading then please do speak up, i'm not accusing anyone of anything, just not wanting any 'pot-kettle-black' scenarios!

welcome to the mac world!
the mighty mouse isn't really worth it coz after awhile it just starts getting dust and the ball is extremely difficult to clean (you have to dismantle the whole thing to clean it, and your warranty voids too one you dismantle)
i have a DeathAdder gaming mouse and together with the mac it's love

I think the prices are disgusting for the products. Yes, I know a lot of work will be put in for them but most people just cannot afford them. While there are student discounts for uni students there is nothing like that for school/college students which I think sucks! I can't afford to buy Sibelius, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, but for software going for under £100 I will happily buy, like for example iWork and iLife.

Re: new mac convert

Thanks guys! So far I've downloaded azureus, stuffit expander, VLC, Quicksilver, appzapper so far.

I'll stick with my cheapy mouse but I might put a better one on my birthday list later in the year.

As for pirated software, Ethically, it's stealing and wrong. However, I know personally from a pirated copy of dreamweaver and photoshop I had years ago that by having and using that I did promote sales for Macromedia and Adobe. I went to work at a company who wanted an in-house designer and they asked me to teach the others how to use it. They bought fully licensed copies of everything... which they wouldn't have done otherwise. So yes, I did steal, but I also did get them business they wouldn't have had.

Technically the company loses a sale from every person who downloads a pirate. But, as some have said .. the person can't afford it and wouldn't have bought it anyway... but look at the amazing stuff they've created, they tell their friends, family etc etc what they made it with and it's all positive promotion and advertising.

It's still wrong though.
