converting avi into ipod format

I have another question regarding the iphone please!

I have a bunch of movies etc on avi format but want to stick them on my iphone. I assume that all video playing ipods allow the same format videos to be played on them? If so, what's the format? mpeg?

Finally, what progs do you guys use to convert? Can anyone PM me any download links please? That would be most appreciated!

Some valuable rep on offer here

Thanks guys.

Re: converting avi into ipod format

I think the format is mp4.

Not sure the download link but I use Super to convert most of my videos, I haven't tried it with the iPod but that is one of the formats. If you just google it will come up with the link.

Or do a search of videohelp.com, I find that quite a good resource for video editing and stuff.

Tried this but it only converts DVD's into ipod format, not avi's - Unless I've made a mistake?

@0707 - I'll have a look - Does anyone have any other programs they use?

Thanks

Re: converting avi into ipod format

Try
SUPER © SUPER © .
or
Videora Videora iPod Converter - Free iPod Video Converter
both are free software, ipod format would be mpeg-4.

I use super often because it has done me a great job converting my dramas
all of them are 1 hour duration converted to 200mb each

If you use a Mac, check out iSquint - best I've used for a long time.

EDIT: Or, check out Media Convert - free and on line - convert and split sound, ringtones, images, docs - MP3 WMV 3GP AMR FLV SWF AMV MOV WMA AVI MPG MP4 DivX MPEG4 iPOD PSP OGG WMA AAC MP4 MPC MMF QCP KAR MIDI REALAUDIO FLAC JPG PSD DOC PDF RTF TXT ODG ODP ODS ODT SXW , but I'm not sure if this will output to the iPhone or not.

I also recommend videora ... it's free and pretty intuitive. You can batch run stuff and leave it running over night which is good too.

how do i select the file though? it only lets you choose this option when you've selected a file that's in your itunes library and in order for you to get a movie (in this case) in the itunes library is by already making it into ipod format so it's pointless really - unless i'm missing something?

i tried adding an .avi file onto my library and then wanted to convert it via itunes but it won't add the file to my itunes library
