Wireless network help

Hey,

I'm trying to get a mates laptop to connect to mine using a wireless ad-hoc network.

I'm connected to the internet via an ethernet cable, I've created a wireless ad-hoc network and my friends laptop is connecting to the network but the internet is still not working.

I've done this before but it won't work this time for some reason. Tried looking it up on the internet but no luck. If it makes a difference, when I took my laptop over to my friends, my laptop worked via an ad-hoc wireless network. Just won't work the other way this time!

Any help much appreciated

Rep and thanks to anyone who replies

Cheers

Re: Wireless network help

Are you sure you've got the internet connection setup to allow it to be shared. Or it could be a permissions problem.

Yep I've set the ethernet cable network as 'shared' so I know that's not the problem. Don't think it's anything to do with permission, I'm just in a student halls flat, we always do this

Any other ideas?

Thanks

To add, I think it's a small setting I need to change on my friends laptop because it doesn't seem to connect to other wireless ad-hoc networks either. Just can't find the setting

Yeh, friends laptop is connecting to the ad-hoc network which I'm creating off my laptop. So yeh in theory I should be able to access the drives and stuff right? How do I do that? (Sorry, I'm not so good with the tech stuff)

Thanks

I'm on vista, other laptop is XP. We've done this before but the other way round. (Other laptop connected to internet via ethernet and I joined via wireless).

I assume we have internet sharing installed..? Don't really know?

This article explains how to set up a wireless network with a router. I just want to set up an ad-hoc (computer to computer) network. Can you find an article that helps set up the type of network that I need? I'll have a look too.

Thanks

Re: Wireless network help

Why not just put your Ethernet cable into your friend’s laptop, and you join via wireless, like you said you did before. (Won’t be hard with it being 2 laptops, and not full computers)

Doesn’t really work out why it’s not working, but it should work that way

Re: Wireless network help

Yep did exactly that but the internet still doesn't work on the client computer for some reason.

When I go to check the i.p address etc on the client laptop, the default gateway and DNS server fields are empty. I think the i.p address also looks wrong.

Any other ideas? Sorry to be a pain in the arse!

Thanks for your help btw 0707

Using the internet via an ethernet cable will only work on my laptop because of the mac address. Thanks though.
