You could get an Ethernet hub like this one : Belkin 2 Port RJ - 45 Hub - Ebuyer and just connect both via cat 5 cables to the ethernet in your room.

If you wanted to share files you would have to check that both allocated ip's were in the same range and set up network sharing on both computers

I can't connect any other laptops to the ethernet port in the wall apart from mine because you are only allowed 1mac address registered per room and my laptops mac address is already registered.

What do you mean when you say check that both allocated ip's were in the same range? We don't really wanna share files it's the internet that we want to get working on the second laptop.

Re: Wireless network help

Ok:

Go into the xp laptop and go to network connection within control panel

Right click on the wifi network icon and select properties

Within the box select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties

This i'm guessing is where you'll find the IP's set as 192.168.0.92

Change the following

i.p address = 10.84.51.222
default gateway = 10.84.51.254
subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

This will set the XP computer to point to the gateway whilst being on the same IP range or subnet as the Vista laptop.

edit: then just connect it to the laptop wirelessly as you've done before but hopefully the Internet should work? Worth a try

Re: Wireless network help

It sounds like you are connecting your laptop to the halls of residence network and to prevent unauthorised access they only allow one network card (mac address) to connect. That is probably where the internet laptop is getting its network details.

I think you will need is to set the wireless laptop to the same default gateway (10.84.51.254) and a similar ip (i.e. 10.84.51.151).
