Connect Laptop to non-wireless computer

Quick question that I'm sure will be answered quickly and accurately as always.

I'm off to my Mums for the weekend and want to take my laptop and use it at hers as most of my work is on it. However, she doesnt have Wireless (yet) so how do I go about connecting my laptop to her puter?

Will it be easier to get some kind of cable (and if so, what?) rather than having to connect her modem directly into my laptop, which will probably be more awkward.

Re: Connect Laptop to non-wireless computer

you can use an ethernet cable to directly connect the laptop to the router, or maybe even a USB but ethernet tends to be faster

Re: Connect Laptop to non-wireless computer

if its a cable modem (ie virgin internet) you can just plug your laptop into the modem (will need to disconect her pc first) and you'll be away

I'm assuming that I can use the same cable that is being used to connect to her PC?

Am looking to get her a Wireless router while I'm up there as my son is now living with her and he has a PS3 (thanks to his old dad) and I'm giving him this laptop if and when I get another free one

Re: Connect Laptop to non-wireless computer

Another way is if your mothers PC has an extra ethernet slot at the back of her computer then you could connect directly to that and set her "Connection" to the cable router to share the internet.

Its a tad more complecated then just taking over her cable modem but it will allow both PCs to be able to use the net.

Good luck on what ever option you take though

Yup, but your son's PS3 should have an Ethernet cable with it too, so there is no need really to unplug your mums comp to plug yours in, just grab the ethernet cable from the PS3 and plugyour laptop into the modem, which should have more than one Ethernet port.

If its a Cable modem that she has (as you mentioned it was) you need to make sure to get the right wireless router. An ADSL router won't work with a cable modem, you need to get a DSL router such as this one which is the one i have, it works like a charm!

Also, DSL wireless routers are cheaper than ADSL wireless routers, so all good there too!!!

have a nice weekend!

oh, and as an aside, i'm 22, and i love my MacBook, i'm sure he would appreciate it if you gave it to him!

wireless dongle thingy and internet connection sharing!

that way you can have one laptop open with Spy and the other one monitoring your greens!!

(does that mean you wont be sat on the toilet with your psp like last time?)

Re: Connect Laptop to non-wireless computer

Just an update. Got a cable modem, installed it etc etc and all's going well.

Only prob is that I cant see where I find a WEP number to give it the security aspect. Her puter isnt using the wireless bit, hers is connected via a cable.

The router was mainly for my son who has a PS3 in his upstairs room. He's well chuffed as his new racing game arrived today
