well there's only a few ports that are normally in use, so you'll probably be alright.

and no utorrent uses teh same port for both out and incoming connections.

Re: Increasing Download Speed

Utorrent is the best.

But no matter what client you use if you use public trackers your speeds are gonna be crap.

Get an invite to a private tracker. I am on 8meg BB and get 750+ kbs on downloads from a private tracker.

I think I've managed to fix it now, getting 100k/bs now which is a lot better than before!

Re: Increasing Download Speed

No problem Detox. And thanks for your help everyone. My ports are open now, and I shutdown my firewall whilst downloading, which I know can be risky but it seemed to work.

Re: Increasing Download Speed

When you're in uTorrent, you'll notice at the bottom on the bar, there will either be a green dot with a tick through it, or a red triangle/orange triangle - if you click that, you can test to see whether your ports are open. If they aren't you can follow the link on the page it produces, find your router, and there will be full instructions telling you how to open them, it may take a while to recognise it though.

Re: Increasing Download Speed

Hi all, I recently setup port forwarding through my router and my download speeds have really increased. I was only getting about 10-15k through torrents before now I'm getting up to 550k!

Re: Increasing Download Speed

is it wise for all these ppl to (including myself) to be posting that we've opened this port and that port and disabled firewalls etc..

just think if the wrong person comes along we might be opening ourselves up for something..

i've decided to close the ports again and just open them as and when i need them.. it only takes 10 seconds to log into the router and do it, plus i feel more secure this way.

Re: Increasing Download Speed

I don't think its illegal or anything, I think companies like Microsoft, and our routers just try to protect us from virus'/hackers as much as they can. By turning off your firewall is not illegal; its your choice to have a firewall or not, it just protects you.

The port thing is basically just telling your router that you want to accept connections through a particular port e.g. uTorrent - So I don't think you have to worry about anything happening to you!
