Domain Transfer Help!

Hi guys, I bought a domain name and a prebuilt website from a well known exceemer about half a year ago. The problem is that the domain is still registered on his account (which I think is godaddy). How do I get the domain transferred from there to my account (which should be ukreg if I have to create one as ukreg is fasthosts domain service)?

I recently bought hosting with fasthosts and I need to get the domain transferred in order to have it hosted. When signing up for fasthosts I said I already have a domain to use and when registered i got this email with

subject:Fasthosts Domain Authorisation Form - Post or fax to your ISP

Attention: Domains / Hostmaster Department

Dear Sir / Madam,

Re: *mywebsite*.co.uk

Please accept this fax as authorisation to release my domain from you and transfer it to Fasthosts Internet Limited.

Please will you make the following changes to my domain:

NEW IPSTAG:
FASTHOSTS

NEW NAMESERVERS:
ns1.livedns.co.uk 213.171.192.250
ns2.livedns.co.uk 213.171.193.250

Please will you let me know if there are any problems, by emailing me at **my email** or phoning me on **my number**.

My details are as follows:

Barry Mc Auley
****....

Thank you for your co-operation.

Date: 29-12-2006

Name: Barry Mc Auley

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

I'm not sure entirely what the question is, as you seem to be in the process of transferring the domain. You will need to request a transfer from GoDaddy or wherever it may turn out to be, by emailing or faxing the company as Fasthosts have directed you. This will release the domain from the current owner.

It would be normal at this point for the current registrar to contact the owner and ask for authorisation. Companies handle this differently, waiting a set number of days for confirmation before either authorising or denying the transfer by default. If you can contact the current owner to ask him to authorise it, it may speed the process.

Different companies have slightly different transfer processes but this should hopefully work, as Fasthosts appear to have pointed you in this direction.

I'll stop typing now, as I appear to have written a fair bit!

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

So should the current owner send an email like that above? What about the fact that it's my details in the email and that the current owners details are different. should he just say it's being transferred to someone else? How will this affect the whois as his details are in it now, will that change?

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

the current owner should log into godaddy and initiate the transfer him/her self. It may take a bit of digging but its easy enough to do. failing that all they need to do is send in a support ticket to godaddy. once go daddy setup the transfer you need to log into fasthosts and transfer the domain to them and check it every few 1/2 days as once the new tag is set, you will be able to transfer it to fasthosts

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

Ok, what I understand is the current domain owner needs to have the domain forwarded to a domain account of mine first. Then I send the email I got from fasthosts to the provider of my domain account (probably 1and1 unless I buy a domain from ukreg to make it quicker/easier) and they should be able to set the dns?

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

Something odd is happening. I contacted customer support and they said that my domain is in my ukreg account (which I didn't know i had) and ready to use but the nameservers just needed changed. I changed the name servers and it said it was successful but they just change back when I go to check them again? A WHOIS lookup still displays the domain to belong to it's previous owner?

I'm not sure why they change back, although I normally change the nameservers before transferring the domain. You can change the WHOIS information yourself, most likely through your control panel or through an email.

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

But thats the problem, I actually don't have the domain, it's a mistake. The ips tag was GRS and they said this had to be changed in an email I got from them so I changed it to FASTHOSTS and now it has been removed from my account and I'm really confused?

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

John had the right idea - all registrant changes if not initiated by the owner will have to be approved by them (usually in writing).
It can be very confusing and without knowing your domain name etc. it is difficult to help directly.
Bottom line is if a whois lookup says it belongs to the previous owner then it does - that would explain any issues you have with fasthosts/ukreg. Once you own the domain you can harass fasthosts until they get it sorted!

Re: Domain Transfer Help!

Yea I've been getting the same 'look at our guide on transferring a domain name' response when I contacted them. What's keeping me back at the minute is the current owner of the site. I've asked for him to contact me with the details needed for the transfer so I hope he can hurry up and do this. Once I get the domain name transferred it should be sorted, thanks for the help guys.
