eXceem - Which monitor should i get, widescreen or not??

I am going to buy an lcd monitor for my mac mini that i should be getting soon thanks to Free4me, and i want to know what everyone thinks.

I am going to use it a bit like a media centre in my room, which is why i thought a widescreen might be good.

So what does everyone else think??

dell have some good widescreens, check out www.autdirect.co.uk for cheap exdemo models (i got one and it was amazing didnt look like it had been used at all)

I'm on a 21" GNR lcd from amazon. certainly wasnt the most expensive at around 240 or something but it's brilliant!

Have the non widescreen version of the same monitor on another computer and it is brilliant. Plus the price is not too bad.

I have used a Widescreen Apple 20 nch or something displays. It's one of those new ones in silver. That was REALLY nice to use. But I heard that some of the Dell monitors are better than the apples beause they use the same LCD, but have more ports and are cheaper.

I'll stick with a CRT though.

Ahem. CRT is actually the best. It's just that everyone seems to be willing to sacrifice image quality for desk space. Do enjoy that extra desk space, won't you?

Interesting that you say CRT is 'the best'. Surely it's the resolution and colour quality that determines the best when all other factors are equal.

All that I can say is that when I replaced my old CRT with a new LCD I noticed gradations in colour quality and brightness that were completely absent in my old CRT (and I'm partially colour blind...! Honest!)

Anyway, just my humble opinion...

It's well known that LCD displays aren't as colour accurate as CRT monitors. And is being stuck with one resolution supposed to be an advance?

Totally agree with you Jonny.

Resolutions etc is why I will also only have CRT TVs.

Also, CRTs won't get damaged if you push the front of the screen too hard.

But LCDs are getting better so if you were really limited for desk space / you can't use as much electricity/ your eyes are sensitive to the flickering etc, then LCDs are good.

crt's produce better quality images, plus more easy to live with viewing angle

lcd's are wall mountable, and take up less space

its a better of 2 evils, and what suits your needs best, i went from crt to lcd, since I have a small desk

I think I am going to go for the widescreen lcd option, as i wont be using it for much photo editing etc like you have suggested, have a computer with an CRT i can use if i need to.

This monitor is going to be for my free mac mini so i dont want it taking up too much space, although at this rate amazon aren't ever going to send me the computer!!

The aspect ratio shouldn't really be the most important thing.

If your going for LCD You should be looking for other specifications that match the sort of work you will be doing Look for high contrast ratios, high and multiple resolution support, low refresh timings.

However although LCD geometries tend to be better remember that for gaming, you cannot beat the refresh and contrast of a good CRT.

digimate make a descent widescreen lcd with a low response time think its like 10ms or something, costs around £100 from aria.co.uk, but theres always the freebie option

I have ordered one now, an Acer 1916ws for those who are interested, has gotten loads of good reviews. Paying for it with some money from freebie sites, and a bit of my own.

A question....say if I got a 23" Samsung HDTV.....can I use that as a monitor later - or is the resolution not good enough?

you could use a monitor lead, but if you want to use it mainly and regirously as a pc monitor then dont get a hdtv from the tv section.

you want to get something like a dell 2405fpw. monitors like that are designed for pc usage, but also have inputs for hd(red,green,blue) and svideo/composite
