Wireless theft?

This is probably a bit deep for us but I've been having a heated discussion at work (telecoms company) over wireless broadband theft.

The argument - If your next door neighbour starts an unsecure wireless network, Is it a A- a criminal offence or B- Just a matter of morality, to use that connection for your own innocent use (non-illegal, no filesharing, no nudy pics).

Since the intro of free wireless hotspots around london, does this still constitute as theft?

Any thoughts?

Simon

Please bare in mind the argument of an apple tree, if tree grows over the fence of your garden you are free to take fruit from your side

There is no excuse...it is theft as the owners are paying for that service, and you are using it without being authorised.

soz..I meant generally - wireless theft should be considered as theft: there is no excuse.

But that's just me...I usually take the moral hardline approach with everything. If there are no moral standards, society would be a mess

Re: Wireless theft?

Very true, but the problem with this debate is that looking at it in two ways, I believe it is immoral but not necessarily theft

I agree... up to a point.

Would you leave your car in the street with the doors unlocked? Or leave all you windows open in your house? Or leave your ipod or TV or computer in the middle of town in plain view?

If you did these things would you be surprised if someone stole them?

All wireless networks have advanced security options. If they're not used then you're wide open.

Unfortunately in this day and age you have to expect the worse from people

So if someone doesnt take the correct measures (cut back their tree? lol) is it theft? or just immoral.

for isp's that give you a bandwidth quota a month it could be, extra charges or in some cases the cancelation of the connection
