Chapperz, another good point but once you put a sim card into it, it's locked onto that network. Hopefully you'll be able to get it unlocked like o2 did for £15.
Didn't know that. All this talk about the iPhone 4 is making me want one even more!

Yeah it is, so you can use it on any network because it's sim free, you choose the sim card. But once that sim card goes in there, your locked to that network unless you can get it unlocked.

Same here Chapperz, hoping the greens roll in!

Where did you get that information from? I thought they were unlocked, full stop. It's the networks themselves that lock them to their networks and I can't see how putting a sim card into it would lock it.

Technology eh! lol

I hate having to wait for unlock software for every single software update and new model release.

also If its sim free it remain simfree for ever , i think ??. unless you call up and tell your provider to lock it.

Lol I've read it on forums talking about the iPhone 4, that's what I assumed happens aswell, I know sometimes it's just too confusing to take in at once!

It's completely untrue. Unlocked means unlocked:

  • You: Hi Pauline. I've ordered a sim free iphone 4. I've been told this is unlocked to all networks until a sim card is inserted into it and it will then be locked to the network of the inserted sim card. Is this true?
  • You: I was under the impression it was unlocked completely and can't see how a sim card could lock the phone to their network that's all.
  • Pauline K: The iPhone is unlocked.
  • Pauline K: You can use any sim with the iPhone.
  • Pauline K: If you insert an Orange sim, you can only use the Orange network.
  • Pauline K: But if you remove that sim and insert an O2 sim, you will be using the O2 network.
I couldn't help but at "If you insert an Orange sim, you can only use the Orange network" Like i'd put in an Orange sim card and try to use it on o2 or something!

Actually... give it another 12 months or so and you'll be able to do that... just it will be called T-Orange (They're supposed to be merging!)

awww crap, I hope that doesnt hop across the pond. T-mo is the cheapest GSM service here in the USA (and my understanding is that Orange is a branch/partner of ATT, the 2nd most expensive carrier over here!)

They already have kinda merged. You can use your Orange phone in places with a stronger T-Mobile signal and get the T-Mobile one, no extra charges for anything, including data https://kareena.orange.co.uk/signal/ same from T-Mobile to orange, although I don't know the link.
