Re: Get paid to give blood!

personally i dotn have a problem with animal testing as long as its not for cosmetic or similar reasons, all drugs are tested on humans afterwards and before going to humans, so testing on animals carefully reduces the risk to humans

Re: Get paid to give blood!

i just reached 17 and a half a while ago and was just bang on time for the blood mobile coming to the school. so i went ahead and got me a wee badge. as for getting paid, i'd rather just stick to the old fashoined way and save lives directly (sorta), besides if its only london i wud lose more money getin there.

What's that got to do with it?

They do drug testing on animals first, and then move on to human testing after the drug has been 4-6years in various testing conditions before testing on humans. My housemate works for Parexcel, the place where the trial went wrong a few months back. They've got more applications now than ever before and are thinking of lowering how much they're paying due to demand. My friend went into Parexcel the day the trial went wrong, luckily he was doing a pretty simple course, but even then, he got paid £4,000 for going to the hospital for 2 nights, every weekend for a month. He's been off since then travelling asia and I dont expect to see him for a good few months yet.

Anyway, nothing is being tested on you when you're donating that blood for money. They use your blood for testing whatever it is, but there's nothing actually to do with you physically.

The only moral objection to this that i can see, is that because you can only donate a limited number of times in a set time period, by donating for money, your blood is used for drug research rather than transfussions and such.

Am i right in thinking however that blood has a set life-time, and if it is not used for a transfusion, it's thrown away? Hence the constant appeals? Presumably in a commercial setting where you are getting paid for it, the blood will be more likely to be used for essentially positive ends.

As this appears to have mysteriously moved into the domain of animal versus human experimentation, lookie here what I got in my inbox today from peta:

Animal experimentation: point, counterpoint.

Quite enlightening imho...

Re: Get paid to give blood!

If you want to give blood for money then great.
if you want the satisfaction that you saved someones life then do it all the time and get your self a certificate to say you donated so many pints.

its not really that relevant on here anyway is it

hands up how many people live within distance to donate in london

If you happen to know your blood type and your Rh negative blood
then there crying out for you as Rh negative people can only except Rh negative blood.
were common people like me can except any type of blood.

Re: Get paid to give blood!

back to the drug trials...

yes 6 people nearly died, but the drug was extensivly tested on animals before and without testing on humans what would have happened? no new drug or put it straight into mass production and kill hundreds of people?

seems like a no brainer to me, I can't understand the debate.

Re: Get paid to give blood!

There is a blood bank about 10 minutes walk from here (brixton town hall). I didn't know this until i read this thread and researched it on the internet. I can't apply for the one mentioned here since I have asthma.

I think I would feel better about donating blood then recieving money for this. Although both will be used for a good cause anyway.

Re: Get paid to give blood!

well i personally think its up to the individual. Sure people need to donate blood, hell if people didnt my mother would have died giving birth to me. But if people, like me for instance, would like to give blood and be paid for it thats fine. At this point in my life, poor student, i need all the money i can get. if i can give something which costs me nothing and get paid for it then thats great.
At the end of the day it is all in the name of helping people. Wheather it be by donating blood for transfusions or donating for $$ to help further medical science its still a good thing. Id love to be able to hop over to the nearest blood bank every few months and give blood, but i dont have any means of transport (other than my bike, and cycling after blood giving is a no-no) since i gave away my car.

end ramble
