If you are never sure then use an email for your own site domain (presuming you have one) so if anything is dodgy then you can just set up a permanent filter in Google Mail to send all emails to that account to the bin.

So for example, I would sign up with spamm234u3@rewardguide.co.uk, if it was genuine then I would be able to change my email later, if not then I would make any message to that account be deleted straight away, so you wouldn't even see or notice it.
