If you haven't received a username/password by email, go to the Books Direct website and click 'Activate my online account'. You will then see the login page, but if you click 'I have not activated my account' you will be able to register your details online and then accept/reject the editor's choice each month.

Hope that helps.

Re: to anyone who's done books direct

i've already activated my account and changed my username and password.

where do i find the editor's choice so i can decline it? is it emailed to me before they send it out?

also, how long from when you sign up does the first editor's choice get sent to you?

Go to 'My Account'. Above your personal details, it will either say 'You have no outstanding editor's choices', or there will be a book with two options, 'Send me this now' and 'Reject this choice'. The editor's choice appears once a month so depending on when you signed up, you may not see one on your account yet. I think you get about two weeks to reject it, otherwise they will send it to you automatically.

As it depends when in the month you sign up, I don't know how long it would be before the first editor's choice gets sent out.

is it normal for the deliveries to take just over a week, or is this merely a delay/hiccup?
Guess what the managers choice is for September?

Re: to anyone who's done books direct

I completed a Books Direct offer, then immediately informed their Customer Service department I misunderstood the policy and requested that my account and all corresponding obligations were terminated. This was all done before they sent me anything, but it worked.

Not sure why everyone's having such a big deal with them, my offer came through as complete and I am no longer affiliated with ther service in any way. Can't ask for more really.

Re: to anyone who's done books direct

it sounds to me you just got lucky cus they wouldn't have an offer on freebie sites if they weren't going to follow it up.

i must admit i'm regretting signing up to books direct as i didn't know about the 4books in a year obligation at the time i was just completing a trade. i may just buy my books now as opposed to having to check my account each week to reject choices i never even asked for!!

oh and btw, you're not allowed to talk about cancelling offers on exceem - just a heads up

Re: to anyone who's done books direct

I foolishly completed this offer back in May and my T&Cs said 2 books. seeing as theyve apparently changed the T&C to 4 books how many books do i have to buy 2 or 4?

And also can I just buy the cheapest books in their catalogue?

Thanks for that I certainly will i thought theyll try to come up with some legal mumbo jumbo to get me to buy more books.

I know exceem doesnt approve of bashing other companies but books direct is an utterly dispicable company that taints the freebie scene. If things dont go smoothly I will defo consider contacting my local trading standards centre and I advice the people that have been conned by them to do the same.

Re: to anyone who's done books direct

I think I saw somewhere that the 4 books includes the 2 you get free, so it's 2 books you are required to buy during the 12 months even if your T&C say 4 books.

Who has been conned by them? All I've seen is people getting sent the editor's choice because they haven't declined it or not read the T&Cs when they signed up.

apparently dvds/games count as 'books' too, they dont have the best selection but if your not much of a reader, might be worth it!

its hardly what you'd call 'good' service when they keep sending you books you don't want.

i emailed them making it clear as day i did not want ANY editor's choice sent to me, but they said Nope, you have to decline each and every one!

Whatever happened to the customer is always right?

So to sum up - yes they are conning you. Taking money from you is more important to them than you being happy with their service. A large part of their income probably comes from people who just want to do the obligation then get the hel outta there!

What kind of a business plan is that, if you refuse to accept it's a con?

Oh and one other question.. can anyone confirm that the '4 books' includes the 2 free sign up books??

I can confirm this, I recieved the two top gear presenter books and on the sign up page it says "All we ask is that you buy 2 more books from us in your first year of membership". So basically, they want you to get 4 books off them, and any books they send as an introductory offer count towards the 4.

I've just ordered 2 more books (The Godfather, Dexter), waiting for them to be delivered, then I'll probably leave because its not my cup of tea.

I can understand why you think its a con or something like that, but they make it clear its a book CLUB, not just a online shop. I don't agree with them, but to be fair, they do make it clear...

whats not to like about a forensic blood spatter expert that doubles up as a serial killer? if you ask me thats good tv, better than all this x factor/big brother trash. but this sort of conversation probably belongs in another thread....
