That is what apple would want you to think to get you to upgrade to a new ipod touch.

It would probably run just fine on a 2nd gen touch, it's only firmware when you think about it. Fine some features *might* not work due to being older hardware but the OS would run in just the same way.

Well obviously the OS would run if you disable some new features, but isn't that destroying the point of upgrading?

Again, i don't think it will slow it down, there are apps in the app store that do the same and don't slow it down. Clever apple marketing and you fall for it.

iOS 4 lags on my iPod touch 2nd gen with wallpapers and multitasking enabled so I don't think it's just marketing. It's like installing Windows 7 on a netbook (I know people do it, but it does lag!)

There's a special version of windows 7 that comes pre installed in netbooks these days. Works just fine.

Sorry if this has been asked before but will I lose any data or settings with the IOS5 upgrade?

I have all my icons nicely organised in folders and wouldn't want to have to reconstruct those. What about pictures and contacts etc, do they stay intact?

Cheers,

Furbs

your apps are likely to no longer be in their folders but with regards to contacts and photos they will still be there

You will need to backup your iphone and it will restore from the latest backup, it will do it for you but to be on the safe side, do it yourself.

You should keep everything the same, although some apps may move around a little, nothing that can't be fixed.

I also have everything nicely laid out and in specific folders! I backed it up and did the upgrade... Everything was exactly as I'd left it!

For me, tethered jailbreak is not annoying AT ALL.

Don't worry, untethered jailbreak has been made a few days ago. Works on iOS 5.0.1 as well as iOS 5.

Will be released soon...

Ohhh i know... It's a bookmarked google search on the Mac :P lol...

It's annoying when I install a lot of tweaks.. and most, Cydia needs you to reboot :/ Which means plugging into the PC, running iBooty (I didn't use the redsn0w exploit) :/:/:/ Soooo irritating

Most cydia tweaks don't need a reboot, they mainly need a respring or nothing (both which is fine with a tethered jb), only some need a reboot. The best thing to do is make a list of the things you want from cydia that you think might need a reboot and get them as soon as you jailbreak so you can reboot with iBooty. That way, not much hassle in the future. Well that's what I did anyway (with redsn0w) and have been using the tethered jb since day 1 with no problems at all.
