I find it weird that the council or whatever were giving out posters that you should stick up on your door if you DON'T want people to come knocking for sweets and that... It should definitely be the other way, stick up a poster if you do.

Whoever said it was a celtic thing was right, I remember when I was younger, I got shouted at by an old man (Who said it was, if i remember rightly "A sh*tty american tradition") while trick or treating, Scared the sh*t out of me... But when I got home I looked it up, Then wrote a letter about it and posted it through his door... I've never been one for eggs

When I said it was an american thing I didn't mean it originated from america, what I meant was the americans take it the most seriously, as can be seen in american sitcoms/comedies and movies etc.

wow so much hatred towards innocent kids lol its a one time a year thing and in my opinion it is not begging at all, its the same thing as saying that when u were/are young and asked ur parents for a Christmas gift means u were begging them for it... just making a few snotty buggers happy with some candy. im sure if you had/have kids and they went to those parents whos kids came to ur house they would be treated with hospitality and some holiday spirit.

I don't think asking your parents for gifts and asking strangers for sweets are the same thing, so can't see that as a good example to use for your point.

my point is that ur "asking" like u said not begging its a holiday celebrated by a lot of people and those who do celebrate it dont look at it as a strange kid coming to my house asking for candy or my kid going to a strangers house asking for candy... just some fun thats all

P.S. im not arguing just stating my opinion

Lol, I'm not disagreeing against your point as well, just pointing that bit out as it's not the best example.

Kids have been trick or treating for decades so I don't really see a problem with it. I stopped when I was 7 though lol, gets boring as you get older, and you're not that interested in sweets anymore.
