PlayStation 3 delayed in Europe

Sony announces next-gen console put back to March 2007 in Europe; blue laser diode issues cited for delay.

When Sony's PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles launched worldwide, there was up to nine months between the Japanese and European releases. So European gamers rejoiced when, at this year's E3, it was announced that the PlayStation 3 launch would take place worldwide over a matter of weeks in November.

However, this morning Sony has issued a statement saying that the PlayStation 3 release date has been put back to March 2007 in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and Australasia. Sony cited 'the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group' as the reason for the postponement.

The Japanese and North American release dates are unaffected by the delay, with scheduled 2006 launches on November 11 and November 17 respectively. Sony's global shipment forecast of 6 million units for the fiscal year of 2007 also remains unaffected.

The European delay means that the PlayStation 3 launch will take place well over six years since that of its predecessor, which went on sale on November 24, 2000. Sony is making no additional comment on the PlayStation 3 delay at this point in time.

Yup, well I'm not too bothered about it as I never wanted a PS3 anyway...

haha, fair enough. a lot of wii supporters are saying this is the downfall of sony in Europe, which personally i think is rubbish! i've always been a loyal sony supporter (my new Sony 46" LCD tv is awsome!) and have 2 psones, 2 ps2's and just pre ordered a ps3 from canada!!.
The big thing i think people are forgetting is it's a blu ray player too. but still if you've waited long for one, waiting 4 more months isn't going to hurt, plus means you don' waste all our mone at christmas on one!

Yeah I do like Sony, but I've never been much of a fan of the PS's only because I'm not too keen on the games, I prefer RPG's and easy stuff lol cos I have no coordination and get scared when I shoot people lol!!

LOL! yeah to be honest i'm really only interetsed in the new final fantasy that'll come out on it! loved all of them so far (except the stupi online one, pay to play - nver really liked the idea)
Just read that in japan only 100k will be available on release and only 400k in the USA.

Ouch, yeah the only reason I would want the PS3 is for FFXIII ... FFXII still hasn't come out on the PS2 for Europe though lol, that was meant to be released in 2004!

Doesn't it really p*** you off though that we are always seen as second class citizens by companies like Sony. I mean why not delay the US release and keep the Europeans happy (of course they will never do this!!!)

Wonder if this will affect the release price?

This means MORE wat for devil may cry 4! I cant wait though. On the good side, its more time to get greens and still have it before anyone else!

Dont get me wrong I love Sony (mobile is superb), but they do my head in with european launches and their attitude towrds us. If they still plan to have 6 million consoles in 2007, that just means they will produce more for the americans and japanese. leaving us with none. If it were possible for a freebie site to import them, it will be going straight on ebay for a hefty sum though.

perrsonally i'd have liked to see 300k America, 100k Europe and 100k Japan - so a least theycouldd say they did release it on time. But releasing it 4 months after is appauling! i'll still get one though for the blu ray player, but that's not the point, it's annoying that as always Europeans get shafted!
Either way i'm not gonna go with the wii or 360 mainly cause the cost of getting both plus games etc would still be too much for something i dind't really want!
