My gf wants an mp3 player but doesnt want an Ipod as she read a bad review in the guardian recently how apple only build them to last a year etc. These seem pretty cool tho - any comments about them? Theres a new video one coming in oct-nov time - if you can wait. sony are really q bad im afraid - terrible software, and rootkits that stop you using mp3s without copy protection etc. If you dont know what thats abt, just take it as a warning, that meant sony got sued for serious money. Its a sad story really, i was suprised sony didnt get decent network walkmen out ages ago - they cudda had the monopoly, as are always considered kings of port. audio - (see walkman, discman, minidisc (grr) etc) sony are also considered kings of bad pc software to accompany their products, and kings of losing the format war - (see betamax, SACD, mindisc, UMD and bluray (you just wait!)) oh and the thing about only lasting a yr - that was steve jobs (apple ceo) saying you should buy a new one every year to keep up with the new technology (as they want to bring out a new one every year), and the guardian writer ipod battery dying, cos he didnt charge it conscientiously. mine is prob 4 yrs old now, was the one with touch sensitive buttons (still the coolest). the battery has gradually depleted, but if you charge it fully, then use it fully - not charge it, use a little bit one day, then leave on charge again. then it lasts longer. this is the same with laptop and phone batteries too- widely believed not to be a problem with lithium ion batteries- but it is - and will be wit your sony one. my advice is dont get a little stick mp3 player. save up another yr and get a nano/30gb one - much beta value, and can play video etc. (by the way - the nanos have the ability to play videos now, but apple wont allow them to, in order to encourage ppl to buy the big'uns) finally - don't believe sony when they say it supports 90 cds - they always do that. tehy assume each cd is 10 tracks, then that you should encode the music at 48kbps. that is below some radio stations quality, and it is recommended to encode at around 128 - 160kbps, as this supports well is the approximate extent of the human ear's good luck! ps- i got my girlfriend a 30gb one, and she cant live without it! I know the software aint great but apparently the latest version is loads better. Anyway - the player itself is tiny and pretty cool. Cant complain really (yet), and she needed a USB stick too - so at least she can do a 2 in 1 job! BIZKID have u seen the new sony phone coming out? Touch screen, 4gb - looks wicked! |

| Re: new sony mp3 playerJust thought i would let you know that the Sony MP3 player I got is actually pretty cool! I was worried about the software (from past experience) but the new sonicstage 3.4 is great. Everything works smoothly - no glitches, and its really easy and very quick to transfer music - actually seems quicker than on my ipod. The player itself is cute and he screen is clear and very easy to navigate. |
