They played very well, i think Sweden turned up thinking they were going to win!
It just goes to show that the smaller nations can hold there own against the household stars!

Re: Trinidad and Tobago - dark horses?

I wasn't the one who said they were dark horses, for god's sake. Are you denying they're black? I think they might resent that more than what I typed.

It was topical, given the fact that Chris Birchall is the first white player to play for Tinidad and Tobago for 60 years.

So you can't say a group of people are black on exceem? Or white? I'm white. I'M WHITE. I DON'T GIVE A **** IF YOU'RE BLACK, WHITE, OR WHATEVER THE **** ELSE.

Re: Trinidad and Tobago - dark horses?

never ment this to turn into a racist debate, just discussing if Trinidad and Tobago are going to provide us with some supprised in the World cup, if its not politcally correct to use the figure of speach "dark horse" then ill just close this thread.

Re: Trinidad and Tobago - dark horses?

A lot of my day job is spent making sure my organisation has high standards in terms of fairness and diversity... it is difficult to make judgements on what is politically correct - the very nature of people means something that offends one person will not offend another!

For the sake of not upsetting anyone, can the title just be changed to "T&T - doing well in their 1st world cup"?

Good old Wikipedia...

Dark horse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

This article describes dark horse candidates. For other uses, see Dark Horse (disambiguation).

A dark horse candidate is one who is nominated unexpectedly, without previously having been discussed or considered as a likely choice. Often a dark horse is selected as a compromise when other, more prominent candidates' factions cannot come to an agreement. This metaphoric expression originally alluded to an unknown horse winning a race and was so used in a novel by Benjamin Disraeli (The Young Duke, 1831).

The expression was soon applied to political candidates, among the first of whom was James Knox Polk. He won the 1844 Democratic presidential nomination over Martin Van Buren on the eighth ballot and went on to win the election. Other famous dark horse candidates for the US Presidency were Franklin Pierce, who was chosen as the Democratic nominee and later elected president in 1852, James A. Garfield, elected the 20th president in 1880, Warren G. Harding, elected president after his surprise nomination, John W. Davis, the unsuccessful Democratic nominee in 1924, and Wendell Willkie, the unsuccessful Republican nominee in 1940. More recently, some have described Bill Clinton as a dark horse, after he overcame a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls to win the 1992 presidential election.

In more recent times, the term "Dark Horse" has come to be applied to contests that work on seeding. At times, a certain person/thing/character/etc. that has a high seed (in other words, is not likely to win the contest) may begin to defy all expectations and defeat others with lower seeds, not just once, but several times in a row.

Just how this has been turned into a debate about "race" (itself an artificial construct) is beyond me. Yet again an example of political correctness gone mad.

The thing is, it's not even a case of political correctness going mad as it is not implying anything malicious(!). As you've pointed out v well, the origins of the term is somewhat complimentary rather than derogatory - "dark" implying unknown.

People should know what they are talking about before rashly pulling out the race card

Re: Trinidad and Tobago - doing well in their 1st world cup?

the point I was trying to make was not about pulling race cards or being overly PC, just that if someone is offended or you genuinly think someone could be and that there are some easy steps to take to stop it happening - just make the change, no fuss, no real hassle, potential problem dodged.

Just to take this thread in a more random direction..... have read some interesting stuff about how double meanings are avoided in german and the impact this has on their comedy - and some english peoples' (wrong) perception that the germans have no sense of humour. A lot of our humour is very lazy - using double entendre or other word play to make the joke. The german language avoids this by stopping words having two meanings (and thus the possibility to confuse/offend unless you actually try to!).

They can build words almost at will by adding compound words together, like volkswagen is peoples' car. This can end up with some real fun words though, like Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz - which is the federal law which provides for financial assistance to students of higher education. The word is built by taking each component and building up the thing you want to express! No confusion there then!

Oh yea - go trinidad!!! What happens if they beat paraguay and we beat sweden? Does it come down to goal diff?

Re: Trinidad and Tobago - doing well in their 1st world cup?

Yeah it will come down to goal difference in that situation, theirs is currently -2 and swedens is 1, so they either need england to win by a couple of goals or win themselves by a couple.

What happens if the goal difference is the same? Does it go to goals scored?
