London half marathon

Right, so i'm doing the london half marathon this sunday (23/9/10)!

This is my first (and hopefully not my last), so i was wondering if any of you have done any a half marathon/full marathon, or any other long distance

Have you got any advice?

I've been doing quite alot of training, and i play rugby so i do fitness training a couple of times a week!

All tips would be much appreciated

vasaline in areas that might rub, seriously need it.

Haven't done a marathon or half marathon, i'm one year away from that but I love running. Get into a pace that is comfortable for you, don't go with the crowd thinking you have to beat everybody, breath in control you don't want to get a stitch.

If you can't run the whole distance, take breathers and stop for a few mintutes, it's better than slowing down due to fatigue and doing a slower time overall. My personal rule is never stop running, but it's different on a marathon.

Most I've done is 8,000m cross country running for Cheshire, needed a lot of physical fitness and stamina for that, but I really want to do the London Marathon as soon as I can, but I understand they'res a waiting list.

If you want any more help, just PM me

Oh and good luck!!!

Yeah alot of people have said about Vaseline, I think il have to go and get some!

That is one this im worried about, starting off too fast with the crowd and stuff. I will find it hard to stick to my normal pace!

How you got any advice for food on race day/ day before? or any snacks on the way (glucose sachets etc)?

Thanks

Oh forgot to say, if you want some cool gear, visit the official London Marathon shop, just don't ask me where it is. I was in London at the weekend and went past it but I don't know London at all

Well personally, I starve myself before a race because otherwise i'm sick. For example I would do fast 800m on the track, and even if i'd not eaten in around 3/4 hours I would still be sick because i'd tried so hard lol.

Glucose sachets yes if your stomach can handle it, I would say bannannas too as obviously they're high in energy. Drink lots of water, and only water. Don't mix other drinks like water/coke etc as this might upset your stomach and make you feel sick. Might not happen on short runs but might happen on Sunday.

Haha, im sure there will be a stall selling it all somewhere! Ive got a voucher for it too

Yeah i do quite often feel sick on long runs (9-11 miles) if i've eaten within a couple of hours, but ive never experimented with food whilst running, might be worth a go i suppose, the energy has got to help!

Oh i'd never eat whilst running lol! What is the furthest you've ran out of curiosity? Do you just build up the miles each time, I assume that's how you train for a marathon?

Yeah they'll be stalls there

Well by eating i men't the glucose sachets! About 11.5 miles, so i'm hoping the extra 1.5 miles wont kill me!

Yeah i started running about 3 times a week, then every other run add half a mile. Each 'training guide' tells you to do it different ways, but i just made it up and its worked for me

Very good, my dad apparently did it in 1:30 that's one hour and a half lol, not 1 minute 30

That's a good idea thanks for that

Please say what your time was, doesn't matter if it's not amazing or anything the fact is that you would have done something that some people don't have the courage to do.

Good luck!

Oh another little bit i've just remembered.

Never wear new shoes on race day. Wear shoes that you've been training with and feel comfortable in, otherwise you could get serious foot pain if your new shoes aren't comfortable.

No problem, good luck again!

Ive just signed up to a local 10k in the beginning of december

It really was amazing!! You would believe how much the crowd helps, their cheering really spurred me on!

It was a really good feeling through the last 1/2 a mile, because there were loads of people lining the course, all shouting encouragement! I would recommend anyone to do it, it was one of the best experiences ive ever had!

That's great, good luck in the 10K then!

Now you've made me really want to do my local half marathon lol, but it's in 5 days and I've not trained at all
