| iPod 20gb | Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...005/12/28/2239 45 CDs = 512 MB iPod Shuffle 65 CDs = 1 GB iPod Shuffle 85 CDs = 2 GB iPod Nano 110 CDs = 4 GB Nano 130 CDs = 30 GB iPod 175 CDs = 60 GB iPod Kind of a rip off, When you think about it? I mean a CD in USA probably cost $10-13, and a 512 mb ipod shuffle costs $99. So you would be trading $400 or so of CDs just for a $99 mp3 player. Unless you buy 2nd hand CDs and give them to the store instead. |

Am I unusual in that over 99% of the music I have on my iPod I either own on CD or have purchased through iTunes...? The other <1% is stuff that either isn't available to purchase at the moment or stuff I'm not sure I want to buy and will delete after listening to it a few times if it's not good enough for me. Cheers, Tez.

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)I think the law is rather sketchy over this thing, because it is not illegal to rip music to your computer... neither is it illegal to sell on used cd's... I dont think there is anywhere that actually says you cant rip then sell on |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)Yeah, I think that's right, that you are allowed back-up copies of things you actually own. I think you are also allowed to copy 10% of something, e.g. a chapter of a book or a song from an album, without seeking permission. |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)Nope, as far as I know according to the DPA (Data Protection Act) you are allowed to make backups for personal use and thats. The 10% thing I have never heard of or come across while studying the DPA but each item had a length that the Copywrite Act applies to it. I think books are 50 years which is why you can find alot of old books copied everywhere. Also, the Copywrite Act and the DPA are not enforce if it is for educational purposes! God I love England! hehe basically you can copy a program from school with your schools permission if it is for your work! |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)I have no idea where te 10% thing came from but at university it was one of those things people held to be true. I only heard it through word of mouth though, so perhaps it's an old wives' tale. |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)The law is quite clear. You are not allowed to hold any copies of copyrighted material if you do not own the original yourself. This has been interpreted in recent court cases to apply to electronic music files too. There was a recent court case at which some people were fined £1000 per track that they had downloaded via P2P networks (Kazaa, WinMX, etc). I can't find the news link at the moment but I remember that it was a landmark case in that the same copyright rights were for the first time applied to electronic copies of music as well as physical copies and also used to prosecute private citizens. In addition, you can also be held liable if you give someone a CD with the express purpose of copying it and/or if you send MP3s to someone which are copyrighted. Personally I'd rather pay 79p per track from iTunes than face a fine of £1000 per track. I'm not saying I haven't taken advantage of Kazaa and WinMX in the past (coz I did - especially when iTunes and the like weren't available) but these days when it's easier to have legal copies of the mp3s I don't want to take the chance myself. Cheers, Tez. |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)Those were just scare tactics you know, and unfortunately the people involved were the unlucky ones targetted. They arent going for the simple downloaders but are going for the uploaders. Which is why they are trying in their hardest to get at BitTorrent because every downloader is an uploader |

Don't worry, I'm not on some crusade here, I've done it in the past when the law was ambiguous (the MP3 bit, not the stealing a physical CD bit) but it's better all round IMHO if people know what the law is before doing something. Cheers, Tez.

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)OK, here's a question. What if I have a CD but it's old and scratched. My friend has the same CD so does me a copy or sends me some tracks as mp3s. Have I broken the law? I reckon not, but it's a grey area. |

![]() | Re: Trade your CDs for an iPod (US Only)No because you could just say you ripped them off your version, scratched or not you still own the tracked |
