I hope you didn't downloaded anything, or you might get a little visit from a FBI agent.

I fail to see why you are disappointed.

Fox pays massive amounts of money each year, and has paid massive amounts of money in the past, to the team who create the Simpsons.

Fox then re-coup this money via adverts and DVD/merchandise sales etc.

Fox are well within their rights to take action against sites that offer their material for viewing without their permission, I believe under American law they have to take action once they know of such a site, as in-action could be seen as approval, though that is based on me reading articles as opposed to any knowledge I have myself so I could be wrong there.

The issue here tho is that if the site in question isn't actually hosting the videos themselves and is instead merely linking to sites that do, then there is nothing that can be done. (Or so I have come to believe)

For instance Myp2p were recently taken to court by a group representing a few european football leagues including the Barclays Premiership, and the judge took no tme at all to throw the case out, ruling that it was a waste of the court's time because there was nothing they could do for merely posting links.

So the question here may be - was WTSO actually hosting these files themselves? I didn't think they were but if their files have been seized for investigation then perhaps they were.

What's interesting is that this site is one of the most popular TV show streaming sites and has been for a very long time so it seems strange that such action would not have been taken sooner if laws were in fact being broken. Based on the result of the Myp2p case, I now wonder whether WTSO will also be back open soon enough? If not, would we then see a chain reaction of successful claims repeating across cyberspace?

I know what you're saying. I'd be happy to watch stuff online that had adverts etc every time you watch it (4OD etc) but for some reason instead of advertising they charge to watch a lot of things.

I don't really understand why they chose to charge people instead of using adverts.

Although I too have very little knowledge on the matter, I see no reason why Fox couldn't open such a site, with the standard amount of adverts that you'd get if you were watching it on TV.

Because the adverts wont bring in the same level of income as charging?

A lot of US networks do stream their shows online, possibly even Fox, but only to US residents

Actually many American networks do offer an "on demand" service like iPlayer/4OD/Demand 5/Skyplayer but only within the US.

You can use a proxy, or something similar, which will allow non-US residents to view these sort of websites. Its how some people watch Hulu.

Well it seems to be successful in TV, and I for one believe that they would get many more people using the service if it was free, it is purely just because people have become used to watching stuff on TV for free.

I must be wrong, as I'm sure whoever made the decision on charging etc was more intelligent that I am, but I would've thought that if they were getting a lot of people using the service then it could bring in more money, than less people who are willing to pay a bit. I still find it odd that even on the free shows, on 4od there's only 1 advert, personally I'd rather have to watch a few adverts and see the number of shows increase. Perhaps an option to pay which would remove ads or something (Like spotify's premium service).

But I think until there is a service like that, people are always going to seek a way of viewing shows without paying, I don't see that changing.

lol wolf beat u to it

Ironically, many people download media from rapidshare, which is now the 12th most visited site on the web. People pay £55 a year to do this, with none of that money going to the pockets of the copyright holders.

Perhaps the holders themselves should team up with their counterparts in the music and TV industries to offer a similar service.

It is also worth noting that the movie and games industries do not actually suffer that much from illegal downloads, just mainly the music industry, although of course they have us believe otherwise.

I'm pretty sure the FBI can't do a think over here. I don't think they'd have anything to do with something like this anyway.

Ye,

I know someone that got a letter with a fine for downloading an album, but he just chose to ignore it and nothing ever came of it.

Wasn't from the FBI or anything, as you said I don't think they have any say.

I never downloaded anything, just streamed it and made 1 post on their forum.

Is the same exact message on the PAL DVD though? I'm sure the FBI can't do anything over here unless our government says they can.

Yes i'm sure we will be extradited all the way to the USA just so they can throw us in prison for downloading a few episodes of our favourite t.v. shows.
