Stick it on ebay for spares
If you declare your car as SORN, and it doesn't have an MOT, but is still insured, if someone nicked it, would the insurance still be void?

I guess thats something to ask the insurer, but I would expect if it was SORN then they would factor that into its valuation

again dont quote me BUT even if you dont have a MOT your insurance is not void but if you have an accident they will only pay for the damage to the other car. Its something thats written in that they still have to cover you for 3rd party only!

Well thats what i heard and i think it depends on your insurance Company.

Your insurance won't be invalid, but if you have an accident and they can prove the condition of your car had something to do with it they can throw out the claim.

The police will most likely let you go if you get pulled, providing its only recently expired. They'll probably point you in the direction of an MOT station and advise you to get it sorted.

Personally i believe that MOT's should be mandatory every 6 months, and there are so many cars on the roads today that just shouldn't be.

But don't worry about your insurance because they cannot throw out a claim simply because your MOT had expired at the time of the accident (as i said, unless the accident was down to the condition of your car, eg. tyres). You are still covered.

I work for a car insurance company investigating claims and repudiating them where possible (pls dont hate me, lol). I've been off work for the last year due to illness but I still remember the trouble we had in throwing claims out because the tyres were worn beyond legal limits. We would look at the weather conditions at the time of accident, as well as whether the road itself was straight or curved etc.. and most of the time I'd be unable to prove a direct link between the car's condition and the accident circumstances.

That said, the most important thing to be thinking about is not the police or insurance, but the road safety of both yourself and others.

All insurance companies do this, not just car ones. I used to work in a Life Insurance company, and there were tons of failed claims through non-disclosure. If you didn't mention you had a cold they would try and dispute the claim.

yes but theres a difference between 'claims fraud' and 'application fraud'

non-disclosures relate to the info you gave at the policy's inception being accurate/inaccurate

but if you took your car policy out in June and then your MOT expired in August and u had an accident in September thats different because you were honest in June when your MOT was valid

if an accident had nothing to do with the condition of car, eg.. it was someone else's fault or car was stolen or broken into, then the insurer cannot escape their liability because the event would still had happened if the MOT had been renewed
