Import Tax

Was wondering if anyone here could enlighten me about import tax, maybe arctic? It's clothes shopping not a freebie. Well I'm looking to order off the Hollister website. Hollister are an American company so I don't know how the import tax works if I order some clothes.

Shipping costs around $40 minimum but only increases about $20 for adding tonnes more clothes so I thought it would be wiser ordering all I need in one order rather than a few orders. The only thing I want to know is how much import tax I'll be charged, like is it per order, per unit weight or per item. The website says "I understand that the recipient of this order will be responsible for any import duties and taxes charged by the recipient's country".

The Abercrombie and Fitch site pays for import tax but they're prices are in pounds and are far more expensive.

Thanks.

Re: Import Tax

It's my understanding that import tax (VAT) will be charged on the total value of the goods if over £18 - £25 (i think around this number). Its charged on how much its worth, not unit or weight etc. It also depends on where you buy from. If being shipped from outside the EU, you may be subject to further charges, Customs duty, not sure of the going rate for this.

Example for import tax: value: £200, you'll be charged £35 (at 17.5%). This is for VAT alone, customs duty may also apply.

Hope it helps,

I'm nearly positive that thats right, but please correct me if i'm wrong someone,

Ash

Cheers Ash, was seriously hoping that wasn't the answer though lol. I'd probably be ordering around £200 so I suppose £35 isn't that bad, just hope customs duty doesn't come to much. Really want to order some clothes from this site cause they charge in dollars and its the same price they are in the malls in Florida.

Re: Import Tax

it is very disproportionate!! and they don't fall for the 'gift' box being ticked these days!! Maybe ask them if they can mark the box 'free samples' and send your reciept seperately.

I rememeber before Abercrombie had a UK store I used to order from the US website. I think on a £200 purchase the tax and VAT will be around £65 but that is just from memory. Check the HMRC website and see what that says
