Linking VCR to computer

Hey!

Is it possible to link a VCR to a computer and copy a video onto the computer and store it as a file?

Just, I have some home videos and I would love to back them up and have DVD's instead as they last longer and you get better qualitty etc.

Also, does anyone know of a good editing software?

Thanks
Chris

Re: Linking VCR to computer

Do you have a VIVO (video in, video out) graphics card, or a tv tuner card?
You need a video input of some kind to connect the VCR output to your PC.

As long as you do it's very possible, yes. If you have a TV card you will most likely already have recording software. If not then you will need some - something like a ULEAD product (I forget the name, StudioExpress I think). I'm not too 'au fait' with recording products as the one that comes with ATi AIW cards is alright so I never bothered looking.

A good (and free!) editing program is the free version offered by AVID - these guys are the real pros (as used in proper film and broadcast editing) and they have a freeware domestic version (very cut down of course)

Well the most easiest way is a TV card, most if not all come with capture software such as Intervideo WinDVR, thats what mine came with anyway.

Plug in ariel/svideo or whatever connections are on the tv card and your pretty much good to go.

I dont use mine much, the last thing I used it for was to Rip the BEER BEER BEER song from The Bards Tale on my PS2, its now in my winamp list. =)

But if you have any further questions just ask...

i got a tv card - winfast pvr2000expert (cost around £50 ish i think) that does just that, has the normial areal input or s-vhs if you have a camrecorder to, the software can save to any file format you have the codec installed for, as well as a usefull direct bun to video cd, or dvd

another option (if you don't have vivo / tv card) might be something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=62010
there are also external tv cards available now - if you don't want to go tinkering inside our pc. but a PCI card is probably still the best, and certainly the cheapest option, and you can get freeview compatible ones (DVB-T) now starting at about £50
