Routers/checking what people have been up to

Ok hopfully someone on here will be a bit better at It than me, my boss took me aside today and told me that the traffic coming into my computer was alarmingly high, can't think why cough. . .exceem . .cough.
Our IT bloke is coming in tommorow, can he tell i've been browsing the net all day or could I tell him that I was listening to the radio online/had messenger running/had a website left open in the background.
The router is a Draytek one, not sure which and we're only a small company, any help would be great

I can't answer your question sorry, but wouldn't having eXceem running be better than saying I was on msn messenger all day?

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

Erm neither is really acceptable
I just need to come up with a bull**** excuse incase they can't check what I was actually doing, thought the radio one was good
That would take constant streaming

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

somewhere along the lines m8 u will have a server.
when u logon to the computer do u have to press ctrl atl and del then enter a username and pass ? if so then u are prob logging onto a domain which is being administered by a server most likey running active directories.
the admin guy can monitor all traffic and data, more often than not he dosn't even have to be onsite and can be done remotley.
as i say try have a quiet word with the IT bloke say ur boss will sack u if he tells him that u have been surfing all day.

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

Where do you work? Is your computer on a Local Area Network (LAN) (if you have an IT guy it sounds like it is).

If your works computer uses a LAN (regardless of what router you use) it's possible to record virtually everything you do.

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

well you 2 have filled me with joy . .

We're all wireless going through this draytek, I assumed that this draytek was an adsl modem (Which I think i'm right in saying?)
Then upstairs we have a backup of all our work and emails, it's a real small setup . .is it expensive to have software like that which can monitor people?

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

ranger costs £4,000+ so i doubt very much ur company will have that, but active directories can do just as much but getting the info from AD is much harder, ranger is geared more for educational administration i can block any app website etc even allow msn only to be used during breaks then blocks it again when lessons start.
i wouldnt worry too much just say u have exceem open but minimized and just glance at it every now and then, but ur really sorry as u didnt realise it was not allowed.

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

the router u have uses adsl lines which will be linked to a central hub, your office must have a low data rate which is backed up localy but my guess will be that its backed up to the central servers over the weekend.

Re: Routers/checking what people have been up to

hi - I use a draytek on our network - it is possible to view activity but it only shows the ip of the site accessed so I can't be arsed to actually find what each site is.
It definitely is possible for them to know but I would wait and see if they say anything, and like Harvez says just mumble about sites refreshing in the background and be apologetic.
