LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

Hi,

Jamie Jaggard here, Online Marketing Manager at LOVEFiLM.com, the UK's No.1 Online DVD rental service and a key customer offer on a lot of UK Freebie sites.

I wanted to provide an update to Freebie site administrators and freebie hunters to firstly update everyone on the new website and apologise for some systems issues we've had firstly with the website and also with the tracking of offer redemptions.

In brief, we undertook an enormous project to merge all of our various services; - ScreenSelect.co.uk, LOVEFiLM.com, Tesco DVD Rental, Easy DVD Rental, and a whole host of cobranded sites for Guardian, Odeon, WHSmith, Boots etc onto one single platform - following the merger of VideoIsland which owned ScreenSelect and LOVEFiLM International. This involved ensuring that half a million customers with 80 million rental items on their wishlists, 40 million movie ratings and 500,000 reviews had to be transferred onto a completely new operational platform. We needed to ensure people continued to receive discs, that our Customer services team had customers' accurate rental history etc. Naturally we had some teething problems, namely the following:

- We experienced downtime on Saturday 7th to Tuesday 10th.
- Marketing tracking links didn't all work which meant that Freebie sites didn't always have accurate data being passed back from us.

The good news is that this is all behind us and people can sign-up to our ground breaking DVD rental service once again.

You should note that ScreenSelect as it was no longer exists but the new LOVEFiLM.com is effectively the ScreenSelect website and service rebranded as LOVEFiLM, with the LOVEFiLM persona, increased editorial info, Downloads and much more. You can't sign-up via ScreenSelect and LOVEFiLM links but we provide both brands because ScreenSelect is still recognised for the great service it was. Anyone signing up via a ScreenSelect link through the holding page will be credited, as will the freebie sites promoting the offer.

Thanks for your time.

Jamie Jaggard

hmmmm

Does that mean we cannot have an easy dvd and a lovefilm account?

I had no idea the two were related!

Does this mean anyone that signed up during this period won't have their offers tracked?

That'll explain the pitiful return of completed signups over that weekend then

Will these signups be manually traced by the networks, or will people have to chase up their own credits? It would be great if the networks would send out an email to all recent sign ups, prompting those who haven't received credit to submit proof.

Sincerely doubt that'd happen though

Thanks for bringing us up to speed anyway Jamie!

Re: LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

I'm grateful for the update but am gutted to hear what is being said.

I got half of my 360Giveaway referrals over the period in question. Hardly suprising that none have gone green, depsite the fact that I personally know 4 people who took out LOVEFiLM on sign up.

It's hard enough to convince people that the scheme works and isn't a scam, now I have to go back to them and say what exactly? Some may be willing to issue a support ticket but others will just wash their hands of the whole thing.

If Giveway knew there was a problem surely they should have removed the LOVEFiLM offer until everything was up and running.

Re: LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

I'll reply to the points above one by one.

1. (the_icks) You can have as many accounts as you like, but you can only have one free trial. Once you've had a trial you'll know how it works so we don't offer more but with Easy there isn't a free trial anyway.

2. (tombsc) The site was down for a long time between the 7th and the 10th so customers couldn't sign-up. When there were tracking issues, queries should be passed to the freebie site who can in turn contact me or TradeDoubler with suspected untracked sign-ups. I can see if those customers are valid and reward accordingly.

3. (Goodapollo) - yes you would have seen a poor return. I would encourage networks to contact uncredited customers during that period. I will support them by checking for valid sign-ups at LOVEFiLM's end. I will also strive to ensure this is done in October. Its probably worth the effort to chase the networks you're working with.

4. (Will and Dunstan) Thanks! Its been a hard couple of weeks at the office. The merger was a big deal. In the last year we've expanded into Europe, merged with another business, moved our warehouse 100 miles, moved office and integrated a lot of websites. We're looking forward to a few months of consolidation and no more technical hiccups!

5. (Furbtastic) Send me a personal message with the people you know have signed up and via which network. I'll check they're valid trialists (i.e. have received at least one dispatch from us) and confirm back to the network to credit them. To be fair to Giveaway the network's emails didn't reach him. In future I'll be notifying him directly with any issues like this.

6. Final message to all - keep promoting LOVEFiLM and do me a big favour. We're sticking our neck on the line by offering a no-commitment free trial. Make sure you recommend the service for what it is. The best value entertainment service in the UK. Who else offers 60,000 DVDs (every one in the UK), free delivery to and from your home, no fixed contracts and no late fees, all for a tenner a month!

Thanks all
Jamie

Re: LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

Thanks for the response, it's a fair offer in the cirumstances.

Apologies for the long list of mail addresses I've pm'd you to check. A number of people have confirmed receipt of dvds but I am waiting to hear from some of the others.

I know it's going to put you to a lot of work but to be fair, I have gone to great lengths myself to get so many referalls. In fact, my wife thinks I've got Obssessive Compulsive Disorder for freebie stuff

Re: LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

Thanks for the reply Jamie! I'm sure I can speak for all of us when I say that we really appreciate lovefilm's involvement in the freebie scene - without your company and the free trial you offer the difficult enough task of getting sign ups would be even more difficult! I personally really enjoy the service too (mainly because I'm too lazy to go to the video shop) and would like to congratulate you on the obvious success your company is having.

With regard to the unconfirmed referrals, is there any chance that you would take a list of all sign ups from the networks (giveaway in particular as far as I'm concerned) and cross-reference them against your own records in order to establish whether there are signups from this period that haven't been credited?
Obviously this is in everyone's best interest but your own - you've got the signups already and establishing whether they are 'payable' to the networks or not will mean they ultimately cost you - but I just feel it'd be in the best interests of the whole 'freebie' community in general if you could, if only to maintain the (already fragile) credibility of the 'freebie' system and as such allow us to best continue directing people towards your top-notch service

Re: LOVEFiLM and ScreenSelect Update

Hi all,

Just to clarify our situation on this. We will be honouring all signups that completed the LOVEFiLM offer within the down time mentioned above. Referrals will simply have to log a No offer credit report as normal and supply the relevent evidence for us to credit your account manually. We are treating this problem as we would any other missing credit situation.

Thanks

I had quite a few referrals during this time and i doubt that most of them will bother applying for manual credit. Should i just write these ones off then?

One of my referrals has already said that they have received their dvds but wont be taking it any further because they no longer have any confidence at all in the scheme. God that sucks

Unfortunately unless your referrals inform us they are missing credit there is no way for us to credit them. We have no way to know who has credit missing unless they tell us.

Hi Tab, hope all's well

What I was getting at earlier is essentially asking whether you (or/and other network owners) could just provide Jamie/Lovefilm with a list of the email addresses of people who signed up to your network during this period, which Jamie/Lovefilm could simply cross-reference with their records of email address sign ups to Lovefilm in order to work out which people had validly joined the service?

Or am I grossly underestimating the complexity of the affiliate system?
