Downtime: new server...

Hi all,

I'm going to be migrating to a new server this evening. I won't pull the plug until late so most traffic would have ceased by then.

The move is to a new dedicated server which should prove much faster than the current VPS. Its based in Manchester and has a very good connection to the backbone of the internet in this Country. The VPS is in the same place so the move should go without errors... (he says).

Anyway, just thought I would let you know. You may experience some down time, but Ill try to keep it to a minimum.

Lee

ps. new design is almost there. so close......

Ooooh which datacentre? I know someone that works in one in Manchester

You should be able to make the transfer with no downtime at all, if you get the sites running in parallel on both servers running off the same database, then just modify your DNS zone once you're ready.

@Chigley. Manoc1. Relatively new datacentre. Not been there yet but will be visiting soon I hope.

Thanks for tip. Im not sure what to do yet. The downtime would be minimal anyway because its inhouse. So nameservers wont change. Should be up within a few hours so might just leave it. Ill see how it goes.

edit: Ill be taking sites down briefly in a bit so databases dont get out of sync. Worry not, theyll be back soon.

Lee, been getting this popping up:

"A user name and password are being requested by [link removed]. The site says: "Restricted Testing Area""?"

Well... nothing ever goes smoothly does it!

Ran into a load of problems with the migration. Just one of those things. Server mis-configurations etc. Should be sorted now. Moved loads of stuff so really I guess it went rather quickly. About 20 sites and 10+Gb of databases, plus a large Subversion repository with all the lovely KUDOS code in

Ive opened the sites back up and have tested. Please let me know if anything is amiss.

Its possible that some people wont have access for a few more hours but throughout the rest of today the re-caching of the nameservers around the world will happen and then itll be ok.

stage 1 complete...stage 2 = new design launch

Do you use version control? It makes life so easy, especially when developing locally on a mac and using a linux server.

I checkout a working copy from the repository on the server, make my changes, and then commit back to repo when done. I have special "hook" scripts that I wrote to automatically push the changes out to all 7 KUDOS sites. Ive not looked back!

For the new KUDOS design I setup a branch line of development so it wouldn't interfere with the production code. This can then be merged back to the trunk when Im ready to launch and all 7 sites will be updated automatically!

If you dont use it you should! Especially since Textmate has a SVN bundle built in!
