Just out of curiousity, is there no way that some kind of program/script can be adapted so that a new user with less than a couple posts can only post under a certain amount of words?

would stop these huge posts.

there is, but allowing them to make the full post gives me more data to send along with a complaint, which stops/slows these down in the long run. That said, they generally last the best bit of 10 mins anyway

I know another website where new members can only start posting on a tuesday, regardless of when they sign up. They call it a newbie tuesday. Maybe you could put a 24 hour threshold between signing up and posting. I imagine that might filter out such spammers.

Is there not a way that you can put a ban on members starting threads of their own until they have made 5 meaningful posts.

I know a few forums have that implemented.You could make it so the only forum they can post in would be the introductions.

That's a good idea! They'd be disappointed and probably wouldn't come back after the 24hrs to make the thread and then go again.

There is this feature available in vB but as there is an Introductions forum here it wouldn't work as you can't limit it to certain forums.

Yep i know forums that have done you cant make a thread until you have made 25 posts. But for this type of forum, new people need help so i agree with beezer that members should have to do 5 meaningful posts.

I can/could do any of the suggestions above, but have chosen not to do so, as I said most spam gets dealt with within 10 mins, but having it posted enables me to send of complaints to isps/servers which have been compromised and are being used as a proxy etc

As with all spam, simply report it, then forget about it
