They'd be worn for a while, took it in for a service and found that one was barely legal, the other not far off. Mini wanted £200 each but we got them at our local tyre place for £150 each - that was the cheaper range, damn run flats!

Letting it loose every so often is probably a good thing, gives the engine a good run and get's all the rubbish out of the exhaust.
